She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic Having spent much of the morning feeling hungover, despite not having drunk anything during her shift at the club the night before, Dora was in no mood to get dolled up and venture out of the flat. If it hadn’t been for Mimi’s appointment with the handsome vet later that day, she might have just stayed in bed all day, ringing for Fin at some point to come take care of her. She didn’t have a fever or any signs of an illness other than being stuck in the loo for a few hours being sick, so she doubted that she was contagious in any way. Maybe tea the night before hadn’t settled with her. She’d never had food poisoning before. Was this what it felt like? As the day went on, Dora found herself beginning to feel better. Opening all the windows in her tiny flat had helped, and she actually had a good solid two hours under her belt without having to rush to the toilet to heave the entire contents of her stomach. Surely there couldn’t be anything left. Mimi barked and scratched at the front door, signaling that she needed to relieve herself. Taking in a deep breath of the fresh air, Dora climbed from her little balcony back into the apartment via the window, and slipped her feet into her heels. “Alright, alright. Let me get my cloak and then we’ll go use the loo.” Gathering up her things, including Mimi’s leash, Dora crossed the room with a few small strides. “Come here,” she said to the small dog as she clipped the lead to her collar. Mimosa licked her face happily and Dora smiled. “Your breath smells awful,” she said lovingly. “We’ll be sure to ask Johnny-cakes about that today.” Giving Mimi a good pet, the pair headed out for a potty trip and to begin their list of errands for the day. *** The veterinary clinic always had a faint smell of wet dog and medicated ointment but today the smell was overpowering. After checking in at the front counter with the reception witch, Dora explained that she and Mimi would sit outside and asked if the vet could come get her when he was ready for her. Standing and leaning against a pillar that held up the overhang, Dora watched as Mimi sniffed at a cluster of pansies. When Mimi started pawing at the dirt near the flowers, Dora gave her lead a sharp tug to curb the behavior.

Pawsitively Marvelous It wasn't as though Johnny was ticking off the days on his calendar until he was fully qualified as a vet, only... he was. It was strange to him that being a magical vet was different to being a regular muggle one, but he wasn't complaining that it took only three years instead of five. He knew it was because magic was a lot faster to learn than science, and doing an operation on a pet mostly involved knowing which way to wave your wand and what spell to mutter, rather than stitching and prodding and poking all on your own. He fully intended to learn everything he would need to be a muggle vet, too, but for now, qualifying as a magical vet was right on the horizon, and he was beyond excited. Helping animals was something he had always been passionate about, and when he left school, he was torn about what to do. He was smart, he could have gone into the Ministry and had quite a successful career in some brainy department or other, but his heart wouldn't have been in it. His heart was definitely in this. Even as he pulled off his blue work top and threw it in the washing pile in the back room because a puppy had just peed on him, his heart was happy. He pulled on a new top, used to wearing blue scrubs every day by now, and made sure his wand was in his pocket before he checked his parchment. The next name to appear on his list was Mimosa Parkinson, and Johnny smiled. Excellent. He opened the door to the small room he was occupying for the day, and glanced around the waiting area for signs of Mimosa's owner. Unless she'd had major surgery to look like a middle aged Chinese woman, she wasn't there. Letting the door close gently behind him, Johnny crossed the small waiting room and peered out of the front door of the building. Dora leaned against a pillar outside, her tiny dog digging up flowers at her feet. He smirked to himself as she tugged on Mimosa's lead to try and stop her from ruining the flowers. "Mimosa Parkinson," he called, ever the professional in front of his colleagues and the other patients waiting to be seen inside. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 410 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Mimi yapped playfully as Dora tugged on her leash, unaware that her owner was attempting to stop her from digging up all the pretty flowers. Just about to move away from her place against the post to go interrupt the little hooligan pup, Mimi’s name was called in a most professional manner. Turning her head toward the door, Dora smiled. Johnny looked good in pretty much anything, and Dora was willing to pay galleons to bet he looked absolutely fantastic in nothing, but the way he managed to make bland blue scrubs look like something out of a PlayWitch magazine was something Dora would never understand. And never, ever complain about. “Mimi, look who it is. It’s your favorite vet.” She spoke to the dog without taking her eyes off the gorgeous wizard standing beside her. Dora bent down gracefully and scooped the tiny dog up in a single arm, cradling her like a rugby ball – not that Dora had ever taken an interest in the game, or any other sports – and approached the handsome vet. “Mr Townsend,” she cooed the greeting, flashing a flirty smile at him as she walked past him into the office and then waited to be shown to their exam room.

Pawsitively Marvelous The flirty smile Dora flashed at him elicited an instant reaction in Johnny, as he smirked back at her despite trying to appear professional. He couldn't help it, she was a natural flirt, and so was he, she just brought it out in him whether he liked it or not. Shooting a quick look at the reception witch, he was happy to see her busy at work, and completely oblivious to Johnny's flirting. "Right this way," he said to Dora, opening the door to the room he was working from today and waiting for her to follow him inside. It was small, but there was enough space to do what he needed to do, and it helped that Mimosa was only tiny, like her owner. The tall table in the center of the room could have fitted at least eight Mimosa's on it, and then Dora and Johnny could have fitted beside them, drank them, and found out if there was room for them to do more. Unfortunately there was a dog to treat, and she would be the only one on the table today. "What can I do for you today?" he asked, eyeing Dora as he spoke, ever an undercurrent of naughtiness to his tone when she was around. She was wonderful to play with. He reached out a hand and let Mimi sniff it before giving her a good stroke, finding her in a friendly mood, which was a relief. Some dogs, especially the smaller ones, got snippy at the vets, and Johnny hated having to magically muzzle them so he didn't lose any fingers. It felt cruel, even though it was for everyone's safety. Mimi needed no such measures to be taken so far, and he tilted his head as he spoke to her. "You have a great mummy, you don't need a check up, do you," he fussed, happy to see a wagging little tail in response. Honestly, the way Dora spoiled her dog, it was a wonder the pup needed check ups at all, she was so well loved. But here they were, and Johnny hoped it was nothing serious. He moved around to the other side of the table and stuck his hand in his pocket, taking his wand out, ready for action, whatever that might be. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 407 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
The few seconds they were stood in the waiting room before passing into the little exam room made Dora’s stomach churn. One of the other pets sitting there must have had something horribly wrong with it to make such an overpowering smell. She choked down the sense that she would be sick right there in front of everyone, hiding her momentary queasiness from Johnny. With the door to the exam room shut, the stench lightened. She could breath easier in here, at least for now.
Placing the pooch on the little table at the center of the room, Dora gave Mimi a nice pet on the head to make sure she was situated. Her hands moved to the buttons on her cloak as she looked to Johnny who was asking after her presence here but in a way that made Dora want to snog his face off. He spoke to Mimosa, complimenting her love for the dog and making Dora’s seductive smirk widen as she shrugged her cloak off her shoulders and set it with her handbag on the little chair in the corner of the room, bending over a little further than necessary to make sure Johnny got a good look at her backside. “For me?” she asked in a sultry tone as she turned back around to face him. “Plenty, I’m sure, but let’s look at the dog first and see if there’s time after.” She giggled lightly as she stroked Mimi’s fur.
“Her ears have been a bit waxy,” Dora said lovingly as she looked at her pup. “I’m not sure if its normal and there’s surprisingly few books at the shop near my flat about waxy dog ears. I thought it best you have a look and since you don’t do house calls…” Hazel eyes looked up at him from beneath her lashes.

Pawsitively Marvelous Johnny clucked his tongue in disappointment. "You should have booked a double appointment," he told Dora. "You get twice as much time." He winked, unable to keep thoughts at bay of him sneaking Dora into the back for some fun. There were other vets in the building, though, and he would surely be caught in the act by one of his superiors and probably lose his job for it. It would be a thrill, though. It was one he couldn't take a chance on, unfortunately, but he liked the thought of it. He didn't suppose the smells that came from a building full of sick animals was all that sexy, though, and he wondered if Dora had noticed the waiting room. You became desensitised to it after spending every day in that kind of environment, but he had noticed it himself. She looked a bit pale, but he paid no mind to it and tried to get on with the job at hand, which was not seeing to Dora, even though he would have liked to. "I'll be able to do all the house calls you need once I'm qualified," he said with a suggestive smile. He wasn't allowed to do house calls on his own, not until he was qualified, which wasn't that far off, but he only got to leave the office when he was accompanying the older vets and they thought he had something to learn from an excursion, like the time he'd gone to Doc Dearborn's and fixed his horse up. Waxy ears wasn't really something he would have been allowed out for, but it was certainly something he could treat. He rummaged through the cupboard behind him for some cotton wool, and immediately set to work cleaning out Mimi's ears as gently as possible. "It's dirty work, but someone's gotta do it," he commented as he cleaned away, pretending that he wasn't filling the table up with murky brown cotton wool buds full of doggy ear wax. Mimi behaved herself well enough, and he soothed her as he worked, shining his wand inside both ears to see if he had missed any. They looked alright as far as he could tell, but he flicked his wand at a medicine cabinet across the small room. The doors flew open and a little bottle of liquid floated out, landing on the table with as much grace as it could. He took the stopper out and dripped two drops in each of the dogs ears. "Did you ask the shop keeper specifically for books on canine ear wax?" he asked as he worked, a teasing tone to his voice as he imagined the awkward moment Dora might have faced in a bid to help her pup. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 481 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Dora made note of the way his lips curled as he mentioned making house calls. She would be penciling in a celebratory appointment once Johnny received his full certification, giving him much more than her congratulations. “When’s that, then?” Had it not been for the nauseated sensation she’d had all morning, or the fact that they were in a bloody veterinary clinic where sick animals came regularly and some were even put to sleep, Dora might have suggested an early celebration. It would hardly be the first time Mimi had played witness to one of Dora’s gentleman callers. It was difficult to obtain any level of privacy in her tiny little flat, unless she locked the dog in the bathroom or out on the balcony, both of which seemed cruel when Mimosa probably didn’t understand what she was looking at anyway.
Dora watched the handsome wizard work, turning away after several soiled cotton balls began piling up on the table next to Mimi. She was such a good dog, and so sociable, just like her mum, but Mimi’s stomach was made of sturdier stalk these days. After the fourth little cotton ball was set on the table, Dora felt a hot quiver rush over her body. Her back to Johnny, Dora placed a hand on her stomach and one on her chest, forcing deep breaths to sooth her stomach while attempting to remain as quiet and natural as possible. She must have caught something and was coming down with a stomach bug, because there was no other explanation for the persistence in her discomfort. Smells struck her more easily and her stomach turned at the slightest hint of anything unpleasant. Ringing Fin to bring her some soup later as she curled in her bed wasn’t a half bad idea, though she had this appointment and Johnny to worry about now. He had asked her a question, and although she wasn’t facing him she attempted to answer. “Medical problems for dogs,” she answered, feigning that she was reading a poster on the wall opposite him as her face paled. “Not a mention,” she added. “Its as if the fates simply wanted me to bring her to you.”

Pawsitively Marvelous "May," he answered as he massaged the drops into Mimi's ears, giving her eyes a quick check while he was at it. She was in fine health as far as he could tell, and he was happy to let her go home without any further treatment, but that would mean kicking Dora out of his office, and it felt like she'd only just stepped inside. He could drag it out a little bit longer. He always enjoyed her company, even in the middle of his work place, surrounded by terrible smells, the sounds of howling, scared creatures, and that funny clinical smell that he still wasn't used to after all this time. "I get to call myself a vet in May, then the graduation ceremony is in June," he went on as he dawdled with Mimosa. All of the other trainee vets who had started at the same time as him would be graduating, too, and he was really looking forward to the after party. Mostly because there were a few hotties he'd spotted on courses in the past that he wouldn't mind getting to know, but he also just couldn't wait for it to be officially over. He would be a vet, and it would be plain sailing from then on. All of his hard work would be rewarded and he'd have his dream job. Dora turned away from him as he was talking, having a look at the posters on the walls, but he carried on anyway. "You can come and cheer me on if you like," he told her, thinking it a real shame that she couldn't see the flirty smile on his handsome face because it was a real killer. She was missing out. She seemed to be in a bit of a daze, though, and he leaned to the side to see what she was looking at. A poster about fleas. He had a quick peek at Mimi's fur, parting it in a few places, but there were no fleas on the pup at all. Dora's breathing sounded a bit off, too, and Johnny picked Mimosa up off the table and moved around to the other side, stopping beside Dora, concern on his face. "Are you okay?" he asked, hooking his thumb over his shoulder. "I chucked all the gooey bits in the bin. You can look now," he smiled, thinking that she might have been a bit squeamish about seeing the contents of her dogs gross ears on cotton wool balls in front of her. "You're not the first person to get queasy in here," he reassured her. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 457 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Queasy or not, Dora was excited for Johnny that he was going to graduate so soon. Less than a year. It would be a big accomplishment and considering he voluntarily took additional schooling after graduating Hogwarts, she was sure he was eager to be done with studying permanently. She meant to answer him aloud. To give a flirty smile, toss her hair over her shoulder and giggle as she looked at him, expressing how flattered and honored she’d be to cheer his name from the crowd. Perhaps even make a saucy comment about shouting his name elsewhere, giving him a little wink and a smirk. Had she been feeling herself, she would have had her hand on his strong bicep, making suggestive eyes at him but instead her eyes were unfocused looking toward the posters on the wall and she swallowed hard to ensure she didn’t get sick in the middle of the vet’s office.
“Sorry,” said sincerely as he and Mimosa came over to check on her. Johnny put his hand on her shoulder and had she felt better that could have led to all manner of things. “It’s good to know I’m not the only weak stomached visitor you’ve had,” giving a half laugh through her response. Perhaps he was right. She wasn’t ill, there was no stomach bug. She was just grossed out by the admittedly gross balls of cotton that had been coated in that thick, waxy – Dora’s hands rushed to cover her mouth as she felt the contents of her stomach begin to rise. She tried to choke the sensation down but her body lurched forward uncontrollably as the bile tried yet again to expel itself from her body. Her eyes darted madly around the room until they had found the bin Johnny had thrown the dirty cotton balls into and she lunged for it, her knees hitting the floor as she doubled over and unloaded her stomach into the bin.

Pawsitively Marvelous She seemed reassured by his words, but he wasn't quite buying it. Dora looked like she was almost turning green, she was certainly pale, and he couldn't help but worry whether she might be ill or not. Sure, he was used to seeing people faint or gag at the sight of needles or bodily fluids, but just a bit of ear wax didn't usually elicit this kind of reaction. If she had some sort of stomach bug, he was worried for himself as well as Dora. He didn't want to get sick, and it annoyed him whenever he was forced to be around people with colds or coughs, knowing he would end up catching it and being off work feeling like crap. It was a selfish reaction, but he couldn't help it. Sick people had always pissed him off to a certain degree just because of how contagious they were. The good thing about his job was that you couldn't catch the majority of animal ailments, so he was pretty safe. Humans were a whole different contaminating story. He watched with wide blue eyes as Dora raced around him to the bin, and dropped to her knees, hurling all over the waxy cotton balls that sat on the top of the basket. "Oh, wow." It was beyond disgusting, but he merely sighed. Any flirty thoughts he'd been having moments ago were completely erased as he watched Dora throw up, her dog in his arms. It wasn't really the most attractive thing in the world, but he did feel sorry for her. He looked at Mimi, who was just staring at him, and crinkled his nose behind Dora's back. He might as well try and be supportive, he supposed. "Let it all out," he encouraged, hovering behind her, trying not to get too close. He would be magically cleaning that up as soon as she was done, because his office would stink if it was left there for the cleaners to deal with. He would have rubbed Dora's back or made some other comforting gesture if he didn't have hold of Mimi, but he didn't want to put the dog down and have the disaster of her jumping all over Dora and knocking the bin full of barf over. He held on to her firmly, trying not to think about it. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 415 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
As Dora expelled the meager contents of her stomach into the bin, her only thoughts were of how mortifying this all was. Could she have managed it, she would have hollered for Johnny to leave but there was no talking, at least not until she was done. On her knees in front of what was essentially a bucket of puke, Dora felt the nauseated sensation subside, shortly after she was able to breath again. That meant, of course, that she was able to now focus wholly on the embarrassment she was feeling. Whether it was a stomach bug or just a weak stomach didn’t matter after blowing chunks in front of a cute wizard you liked to flirt shamelessly with. Dora buried her face in her hands as she relaxed back into a kneeling position on the floor, her eyes tugging to keep at bay the stinging tears that were threatening to embarrass her further. “Johnny, I’m so-” What? Disgusting? Ashamed? Pathetic? “So sorry.”
Face still in her heads, she gave her head a sad shake, mentally chastising herself as if she could have stopped this all from happening somehow. The smell hit her nose and she couldn’t stop herself, tears fell as she scrambled to pull up her skirt, flashing her knickers as she panicked trying to get her wand out of the garter on her right thigh. She banished the bin bag and all of its contents to the dumpster in the alley then clambered to her feet, actively avoiding Johnny’s eyes. “I’m so sorry,” she said again, her voice cracking with emotion. Her entire body, not just her face, was flushed with embarrassment and a warmth that was not at all comforting. She reached for her dog, still avoiding looking anywhere near Johnny’s handsome, and probably disgusted, face. With Mimi under one arm she made for the door but become confused and even more flustered when she realized she didn’t have her handbag or her cloak. Whirling around, Dora tried to remember where she’d set them down but she’d come face to face with Johnny and she just wanted to die.

Pawsitively Marvelous Her embarrassment was uncomfortable to watch, though at least she had the good thought to clean her own mess up, that was one less job for Johnny. He felt bad for her. "No, Dora, don't-" his sentence was cut short as she stood up and grabbed Mimi from him, and he passed the pup over as carefully as he could in such a panicked hurry. She went for the door, her belongings left behind, and then she must have realised because she whirled around so fast that she almost crashed into him as he made to follow after her. "Hey," he placed his hands gently on her arms to steady her. She looked like shit, and he didn't like the thought that she wanted to get away from him so badly. Was he really that bad? Was he someone she thought wouldn't understand? It was something he would brood over for hours later, but for now, he needed to help the girl before she made herself sick again. "You're clearly not well," he told her, icy blue eyes serious as he took in the paleness of her delicate face. He sighed, glanced at the clock on the wall, and made his mind up. He could spare an extra ten minutes before his next client was due in, so he moved around Dora and locked the door with his wand. Crossing the room, he ran his finger over her file, finding the address and giving a little nod of his head. He knew the area well enough to be able to apparate there without any problems. He picked up Dora's cloak and draped it around her shoulders, handing her her bag and wrapping his arm around her waist. "Let's just get you home," he said, and with one last check to make sure they had everything, he gave a quick twist and they disappeared from his office with a small pop. He half expected to be covered in sick once they reached Dora's apartment. Apparating wasn't the most pleasant sensation even when you were well, but he wasn't sure if it were even physically possible to vomit while you were travelling like that. His own stomach lurched with the familiar sensation, and he held on tightly to Dora as they popped into the alley behind the building Dora lived in. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 412 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Johnny’s hand on her arm made her feel as though she was going to be sick again, though not in the same way as before. Dora had worked hard her entire life to cultivate a certain persona, something cool and easy going yet sexy. Someone the men wanted to be with and the women wanted to be. She’d had some setbacks over the years, the more recent ones being a little harder than most, but having the illusion completely shattered in front of someone Dora had openly crushed on was cringe-worthy. There was no coming back from this moment. There would be no more flirty greetings or half-assed reasons to have Johnny look over her pup, and there certainly wasn’t any chance of her and Johnny snogging again, let alone shagging in a broom cupboard somewhere. If she ever saw him again in public, Dora knew she would just die of residual embarrassment. She didn’t even want to look up into his perfect eyes as he spoke to her, sighed, and offered to take her home. She cried silently but nodded her consent as Johnny put his arm around her waist.
Cradling Mimi in one arm and clutching her handbag in the other, Dora felt her body bumping into Johnny’s as they apparated to the alley near her little apartment building in Wales. It wasn’t a pleasant journey for Dora. Though it lasted a short moment, it took all her concentration not to be sick again and she was grateful for Johnny’s arm around her waist, tethering her to him and guiding her where she was unable to go herself. She felt pavement under her heels and steadied herself on her legs before taking a sidestep away from Johnny. “Thank you,” she whispered gently, green eyes refusing to meet his baby blues. Instead, she knelt down in the alley and set Mimi on the ground, then fumbled with the latch on her handbag. Pulling her wand again from her garter she realized she had put it away so hastily before that she’d nearly lost it on the trip home but thankfully the lacy material had clung to the wood just enough that she did not need to make a trip to Ollivander's in the near future. Pointing her wand at her handbag, Dora enlarged it so that it was the size of a small dog carrier despite still looking like an ordinary bag. “Come on, Mimi,” she said to the dog, helping the tiny pup into her bag and closing the flap to conceal the little beast. “Pets aren’t allowed in the building,” she explained to Johnny even though he hadn’t asked. She picked up the handbag which was considerably heavier now that it contained an animal, but she’d had practice in sneaking Mimi in and out of the apartment building, so this wasn’t anything unusual for Dora. Standing to her full height, Dora finally looked up at the sexy brunette who had escorted her home. Her face still wet with tears, Dora wanted to apologize again but her face flushed. “Thanks again,” she said meekly.

Pawsitively Marvelous Dora steadied herself and then stepped away from him with a quiet thanks, and Johnny felt terribly sorry for her. She couldn't help getting sick, it wasn't like she'd destroyed his bin on purpose. He watched as she enlarged her handbag and tucked Mimi inside. It was quite clever, concealing your dog in a building that didn't allow pets. He liked her nerve, and it elicited a lopsided grin from him. He imagined she'd have sound proof barriers around her apartment, too, so nobody would hear a dog barking and report her. How in the world she dealt with Mimi needing to go to the toilet, he didn't want to know. It was an apartment block with busy streets around it, no gardens in sight as far as he could see, but then he'd never been inside. He'd wanted to be inside until Dora had chucked her breakfast in front of him. Maybe another time. He needed a bit of time to try and block the memory off somehow. Shove it on a shelf at the back of his mind and cover it up with a blanket, never to be seen or thought of again. Dora thanked him a second time, and he shook his head. "Don't worry about it," he told her warmly. "Just take care of yourself, okay? She looked so pale and small, he half wondered if he should escort her right up to her apartment door, but then every time he'd imagined doing that, he'd gone inside and they'd had amazing sex. That was off the table, and he didn't want to ruin his own fantasy, but her tears made him feel guilty about just dumping her outside and leaving her there on her own. "Are you going to be alright going up on your own?" he asked, out of duty more than desire. He checked his watch. He had a few more minutes to spare before he'd have to pop back to his office and carry on working. He had a niffler coming in with some bowel troubles. It had been passing nuggets of gold every time it got the urge, and that just wasn't normal. Between that and Dora's vomit, his day had really gone downhill, but all he could do was get on with it and look forward to the end of the day. _______________________ tag: Euphadora Rose Parkinson words: 414 outfit: Sexy vet scrubs. She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
If there could have been anything more mortifying than this day, Dora didn’t want to know about it. She was too ashamed of herself and of her weak stomach to look up at Johnny beyond a small glance as she thanked him, and he responded like the gentleman he was, telling her not to worry and to look after herself. She nodded, a strained smile of politeness on her face. “I’ll be fine,” she told him, trying to convince herself as much as him. “If I can make it all the way up without getting sick after I’ve been drinking, this shouldn’t be a problem.” Her pathetic attempt at lightening the mood with a halfhearted joke only made her feel worse about herself and she shook her angrily at herself as she turned away from him and headed toward the main street. Dora didn’t look back. She didn’t want to see Johnny’s reaction to her leaving, the look of relief he probably had on his stupidly handsome face. She’d always looked back before, let her hips sway a little more as she strolled away from him, hoping to catch him staring at her perfect arse. She walked swiftly and with as little swagger as she could manage until she turned the corner and left the alley completely.
Pulling open the door to her apartment building, Dora ducked inside and again let her tears fall freely. Mrs. Minsch was checking her mail in the lobby and looked up, but Dora headed straight passed the old woman without so much as a “hi”. Her flat was several floors up and Dora gripped onto the railing tightly as she slowly made her ascension toward her apartment. Once inside, Dora set her handbag on the floor to let Mimi out, then shuffled out of her heels and fell onto her bed. She felt fine now, aside from the shame that was overpowering her now, but there was no queasiness. It was as if her illness had just switched off. Dora spent the rest of the day convincing herself that her body was out to get her, to embarrass her so spectacularly that she’d never find another moment of happiness again. If she left her flat for any reason, she would surely be ill once more and who knew who she’d embarrass herself in front of this time?! The safest option was to hole up in her tiny little studio and pretend she didn’t exist, and when that didn’t work she sat on the floor of her bathroom and carved up her thigh until the pain released a serene feeling that made her smile.
