PERSONALITY Boggart: "Lara" envisions herself transforming into an enraged Veela, growing a cruel-beaked bird head and having scaly wings burst from her shoulders. If she doesn't cast the riddikulus spell quickly enough, fire sparks from her fingers and threatens to burn everything around her. Mirror of Erised: Lara sees herself shaking hands with the board members of her father's company. She turns and sees her grandparents and parents. Her father tells her how proud he is of the woman she's become. Patronus: Fox - Conjured by remembering her 10th birthday, when her parents and grandparents were alive. It was a perfect day spent with the people she loved. Nadia, who prefers to go by Lara, is an ambitious, intelligent, somewhat ruthless half-pureblood, half-veela who is very sensitive about her "half-blood" status (which is a family secret). She inherited magic, black hair, blue eyes, and passion from her father, and beauty, charm, and a volatile temper from her mother. She is most afraid losing control of her temper and that her veela blood would make her turn into a fire hurling bird, so her rage either dies out or (more likely) manifests in a slow burn often leading to methodical revenge for those who cross her. She's extremely practical and independent and doesn't cater much to "feelings". Her sole ambition is to take over her father's company and won't let anything stand in her way. She doesn't have many friends, more like acquaintances, mutually beneficial hookups, and pawns. Despite being half veela and inheriting beauty and charm from her mother, she prefers to be admired for her intellect, but she is not above using her charms to get what she wants. HISTORY Mother: Rayna King, 43, Veela Father: Alexander King, 49, Slytherin, Pureblood Siblings: None Partners: None Others: Juliette Ophelia King, 40, Slytherin, Pureblood, Aunt Part I – Alex and Rayna Although Alexander King, CEO of King's Development, came from a long line of pureblood supremacists, Alex never fully adopted the family dogmas. Further evidenced by his marriage to a beautiful Veela named Rayna. He met her on a business trip to Bulgaria and fell in love at first sight. Convinced his family would love her as well, he married her and spirited his new wife back to England with him. Unfortunately, Jupiter and Cressida King, Alexander’s parents, did not embrace Rayna as Alex hoped, and his younger sister Juliet Ophelia (Jo) openly showed her disgust at the union. His parents insisted on a quiet divorce and kept the marriage a secret until Rayna became pregnant. As a last resort, a false history was created to support Rayna’s “pure” bloodline. The lies, as well as the clear prejudice, was a strain on their marriage, as Rayna came from a noble Veela bloodline and she was not accustomed to being “inferior”. Everything changed after Nadia was born. While Rayna was unable to gain favor with Alex’s parents, they were completely enchanted by Nadia Elara King. They didn’t even mind that Nadia was named after her Veela grandmother, Nadya. The tension in the household began to thaw and against all odds, Alexander’s parents apologized for their nasty behavior, after which they made a sincere attempt to welcome Rayna to the family. They were happy for a little while. Part II – Goodbye Love Nadia was only six when she first saw her mother transform. After waking to her parents shouts, she left the safety of her room to investigate. She found her father being attacked by a large scaly winged creature with fire in her hands. Though she was clearly terrified, she ran to protect him, by running between her father and the creature and screaming at the top of her lungs for the monster to leave her father alone. Rayna’s anger quickly dissipated, and she transformed back into her “human” appearance. Both Alex and Rayna felt horrible after what happened and tried to explain to Nadia about her Veela heritage, but Nadia was already traumatized. They decided to take the memory away and try again when she was older. Terrifying her own daughter was the string that began to unravel the King marriage. Rayna had long been away from her family and her “world”, she had been pretending to be a witch for years, and even her own daughter had been afraid of her “other” form. She missed her home. She missed her own kind. Shortly after Nadia’s 11th birthday Rayna disappeared. Alex found a goodbye letter detailing Rayna’s unhappiness in their home. Alex and Nadia were devastated. Alex stubbornly refused to go after his wife. He considered her leaving to be a betrayal not just for him, but for Nadia. It wasn’t until Jupiter of all people told him to go and bring his “daughter” back that he even considered it, but when Cressida revealed Nadia’s nightly tears over her mother’s absence, Alex – pride be damned – left to find his errant wife. Part III – The Tragedy Nadia was sorted into Slytherin. Jupiter and Cressida, both Slytherin alumni, were so proud of their beautiful granddaughter. The subject of her blood purity remained a secret, even to her, and while she was of the same opinion of her father, she was still regarded as a pureblood and enjoyed the benefits and position that afforded her. School was a perfect distraction for Nadia, who was still grieving over her mother’s abandonment. While the search for her mother continued, Nadia tried to focus on receiving top marks in school – as though she could bring her mother back by being “good enough”. Time passed and still Rayna could not be found. After a year with no trace, Alex suspected foul play. He reinvestigated his wife’s disappearance as though it were a crime and clues began clicking into place. Alex was convinced Rayna had been kidnapped or worse, but he kept this a secret from Nadia, not wanting his daughter to worry. In her third year during Christmas break, Nadia returned home. At thirteen and flooded with hormones, Nadia was furious with her mother’s abandonment and no longer wanted anything to do with the woman who broke her father’s heart. She also saw her mother as the reason for her father’s obsession and subsequent prolonged absences. This year however, he promised to call off the search for Nadia’s winter vacation. He was home for only a week before announcing that he had found Rayna. He believed she was alive and he was leaving to retrieve her, but he promised Nadia he would be home for their annual Christmas Ball. While Nadia was convinced she wanted nothing to do with the woman, a tiny spark of hope entered her chest. Maybe she would have both her parents home for Christmas. She would not have either parent home for Christmas. Nadia waited the entire evening for her father to return home with her mother, instead the authorities arrived. Nadia wasn’t allowed to hear the news, but she knew something was wrong by the hushed whispers and stares. Alexander King was dead. Part IV – The Curse Nadia became her grandparent’s ward. She didn’t fully know how to cope with her father’s death, and her grandparents were too bereaved to help her. Having no source of comfort, she snuck into her aunt Jo’s stash of euphoria potions for the first time. It wouldn’t be the last. Three more years passed, and Nadia was in her 6th year at Hogwarts. She was honored as a prefect and showed promise of becoming Head Girl in her 7th year. She received top marks on her OWLS and was preparing to take her NEWTs. Her success was not without a price. On the surface Nadia was “perfect”. Good grades, good manners, excellent extra curriculars, even part of the Slug Club, which she thought was utterly ridiculous. Below the surface however, she had a fierce temper, ruthless intellect, and more than half of her charming personality was comprised of literal charms and euphoria potions in addition to whatever else she needed to keep herself going. The easy days of her childhood were gone. Jupiter and Cressida reverted to their respective pureblood snobbery and distant ways, and her aunt Jo ruled the household with an iron fist. Nothing Nadia did was ever good enough for the woman, and her grandparents rarely came to her aid. Their abandonment had almost been worse than her mother’s as Nadia couldn’t understand the absence of warmth that had been so readily available before. All became clear the summer before her final year at Hogwarts. Nadia woke to flames and smoke surrounding her. She couldn’t breathe, the door was kicked open and her grandfather appeared beckoning Nadia to him. She reached him in time before a fiery beam fell on her bed. Through the chaos he was calming her down telling her not to become upset. He led her to safety and told her to stay where she was as he went for Cressida who had also run into the flames to retrieve her own daughter. They had woken up to the fire just as Nadia had been, and by the time they woke, the flames were far too furious to extinguish, their priority instead was getting their family to safety. Nadia stood outside waiting for her grandparents to join her, but they never came. A lone figure did appear, that of her aunt Jo, and then there was nothing but ash and smoke. After her grandparent’s funeral she returned home with her aunt. Jo had never been particularly warm toward Nadia, but Nadia had never seen the hatred in her eyes before. As they returned to the chateau Jo pulled her to where the fire had been, then slapped a shocked Nadia. “This is all your fault you filthy half-breed Monster!” For the next hour, though it felt like a lifetime, Jo revealed the truth of Nadia’s parentage, including the details behind her father’s death. He had been killed in a fire searching for Nadia’s Veela mother. She ended the acrimonious tirade with the claim that Nadia had been the one to start the fire that killed Jupiter and Cressida. Jo was now Nadia’s ward, but she had no intention of keeping the “monster” and as soon as Nadia graduated she would be on her own. At least that had been the plan until Jupiter’s will was read. Nadia inherited everything. She was too young to run King Development, which would remain under Jo’s control until Nadia’s 25th birthday, but the money and the land were all Nadia’s. Jo was furious. The façade was broken, Nadia couldn’t go back to believing her aunt loved her but was just “distant”, and Jo couldn’t pretend to care for the girl for the money either. Instead they formed a truce. Jo would manage King Development for Nadia until her 25th birthday, and Nadia would set aside a trust for Jo to live out the remainder of her days with the wealth she was accustomed to. But something else was broken that couldn’t be fixed by money or her family’s company, Nadia was a monster. Her temper was a danger to herself and to others. She would need to learn control in all things, not because of her reputation, but because of the consequences and the havoc she could wreck. Abandoning all sense of self and ties to her mother’s side of her family, she began going by “Elara”, “Lara” for short. Part V – Moving On Lara was not elected head girl, it was a chink in her perfect armor and she obsessed over it for a while, deflecting her real issues with her scholastic imperfections. She did receive an O on every single NEWT exam except for History of Magic which she found incredibly dull. After graduation she began studying her father’s company wanting to learn the trade and soon realized she had quite the aptitude for business and enjoyed the thrill of mergers and acquisitions. She’s enjoyed a few relationships over the years, but nothing serious. Whenever she found herself falling too deep she ran the other way. Now she has a bit of a reputation as a heartbreaker after refusing three marriage proposals. Unfairly in her opinion, as she told each of the men that she was never going to marry at the onset of their relationship. Her aunt Jo moved to their London home, while Lara remodeled the Chateau, they only see each other when it is strictly necessary, and occasionally at King’s Development. Meanwhile Jo has been scheming her own succession upon Nadia’s 25th birthday. She has no intentions of handing over King’s Development and has no qualms about getting her hands dirty. She is the one who got rid of Rayna after all, as well as her brother and her parents when they began asking too many questions. Getting rid of the half-breed bitch would be no trouble at all.
