Ugh, her day was at an end. Her work day that was and really Lilith hadn’t actually done all that much. She’d gone into work, making an appearance to please the big boss and then she’d fiddled with a bit of paperwork but as everyone knew Lilith never actually worked in her office. She had one of the biggest offices in the building and yet the majority of the work week it was empty. Still it was her space and the was no chance of her ever giving it up. Not unless she was offered a new office of her own or she decided to leave for whatever reason. Perhaps she and Rabastan would move the wedding date up. Maybe she’d grow bored of her little hobby. Perhaps she would find a new, better job that she preferred. Lilith didn’t really know and she didn’t really care. She worked hard enough. She certainly pleased those she worked with enough and her superiors were happy with her work so she would continue to do what she did all the time. Turn up in the mornings and leave either just before or just after lunch. Lilith couldn’t even remember the last time she’d worked a full work day and today was no exception.
Pushing back her chair from her desk she pulled out the parchment from her type writer and laid it down on her desk. Her owl was waiting patiently and silently in the corner of her room, over by the open window where a cold breeze was filling the room but Lilith didn’t mind. She rather enjoyed the frigid air of winter, so much so she was planning her wedding for winter this year. The end of this year that was, she rather preferred having the time and the space to chose it all and Rabastan didn’t seem to mind all too much. He had his input here and there but Lilith was taking rather well to all this wedding planning but she preferred doing it alone. Her mother was rather keen on everything and Mrs Lestrange seemed to show quite an irritating eagerness to help too and it was all rather hard to direct their attention elsewhere. Thankfully Mrs Lestrange had a granddaughter to dote on. Bringing up the subject of the child would bring light to the grandmothers face. Everyone had been shocked that the Lestrange line was not continued when Rodolphus and Bellatrix had a daughter but no one could really say they were all that surprised. While the Lestrange's had strong male lines, the Black's were clearly cursed, or at least the Rosier side of the line was. Three daughters and Cygnus Black probably wanted to pull his hair out and slaughter his wife. With her own mother she could direct her attention towards Loosh's up and coming nuptials. He had his own bride and wedding plans to prepare for and yet her mother still seemed more keen on the union between the Burke's and the Lestrange's. Not that Lilith could blame her, to tie in with the Lestrange's was considerably better than the Nott's or whatever family it was Lucian was now promised to. Lilith couldn't say she'd paid all too much attention to her brother's bride to be and her family.
Having her thoughts turn to her brother Lilith decided she wanted to spend some time with him. She looked at her watch and decided now was as good a time as any. He'd be closing up soon or he could leave it to one of the menials that he employed at his establishment to see to it the place was locked up good and tight. Lilith wanted time with her brother and she wanted it now. And some cocktails. The Ambrosia lounge was of course the forefront of her mind after deciding she wanted cocktails and so she made her way through her home, passing through the extravagant entry way and making her way up the stairs, calling her house elf Mitzteig to bring the carriage around before she walked the corridor to her bedroom. It didn't take Lilith long to get ready. Fresh make up, new clothes, different hairstyle. She reapplied her perfume and was ready to visit her brother. Slipping her earrings in she looked at herself in her vanity mirror and headed out the door and back through her extravagant manor. One would have thought that Lilith would have been quite lonely there all alone but she wasn't, she rather liked the quiet of a large, empty manor. Soon enough Rabastan would live there too and perhaps within a year of being married they would welcome their own little bundle of join, a Lestrange heir that his brother could not seem to produce with his current wife.
Climbing aboard the carriage Lilith sat back in her seat and gave her command. The winged horses started moving at the command of the driver before they lifted off into the air. The white and gold embellished carriage took little over five minutes to reach its destination. It was a little bit of a walk before she reached Lucian's shop but it was better than apparating and potentially ruining her hair or her outfit. The shop was quiet, a couple of customers lingering about and Lilith checked her watch. It was exactly closing time but rather than shooing out whatever kind of clients of Lucian's these were, she browsed the shelves, looking for ideas of new and wonderful potions she might try creating, something with the precious oleander she had out the back of the house.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
“Add Angel’s Trumpet to the order. Two pounds.” Lucian was shouting from the store room in the back of the shop up to Marcus who was tending the front counter and minding the store floor. “Make that three.” The morning had been spent doing inventory on the legal potions and elixirs offered at Elixirium, along with their stock of ingredients which Lucian used to brew most of the potions himself. It was easy enough, Luc had excelled in the subject while in school and he found it a rather relaxing pastime as an adult. Everyone deserves a little oblivion in their life, and whether they find it in hobbies or elixirs, Lucian was all for it.
Moving a jar to the left and another to the right, a worn label was now visible from the back of the shelf. Moonstone. They were running low and with Valentine’s Day nearing there was sure to be an influx of love potion orders, many of which required a dash of powdered moonstone for that added longing feeling on the part of the potion’s intended recipient. Lucian didn’t ask why people purchased the items that they did, nor did he want to know. Their business was their own and he wouldn’t have his business – the more profitable portion of it, at least – if he made it a habit to ask too many questions. Primarily, if someone requested a “special order” item, he asked ‘how much of it do you want?’ and ‘when do you want it?’ Anything beyond that was strictly off the table in his shop. He ran a tight ship, hiring only the finest potions makers and insisting they follow his rules to the T. If anyone under his employ asked wrong questions they would quickly find themselves without a job. Lucian’s clientele was of the utmost importance to him and his business.
He heard the bell above the door jingle and knew that there were customers in the shop now. Deciding to finish the order list himself, Lucian drew his wand and conjured a stenoquill and a roll of parchment. “Moonstone, one pound.” As Lucian spoke the stenoquill wrote everything he said, word for word. He moved a few more jars around and added a few more items to the list. “Mistletoe berry, a dozen sprigs. Flitterby wings, four pounds. Doxy venom, one gill.” The bell jingled again over the door, signaling that his patrons had probably made their purchase and left, but the list was complete and there was no need to shout to Marcus. He banished the stenoquill and pocketed his wand, then carried his list of items up to the front of the shop where Marcus could add them to the order form for their supplier.
Lucian was surprised to see that not only had their original customers not gone, but a familiar coif of blonde hair was browsing the shelves. “Well isn’t this a surprise,” Lucian said warmly as he stepped from the backroom and smiled at his sister. Luc handed the list he had been working on to Marcus as he moved past the counter and onto the store floor. “Add these to the order and get it sent out before you clock out today.” A stern look was not needed but given anyway as he instructed Marcus on the order before carrying on towards his sister. “Lilith,” he greeted her more formally now that he was stood in front of her instead of across the room. “Looking for something fun to do over the weekend?” If it was potions she was after, Lucian always gave a hefty family discount.

It wasn't often that Lilith stepped foot in her brother's shop. She rarely had any need. If she wanted something he could bring it to her or a house elf could go and collect it. She much referred having Lucian bring things over to her because it meant she got a little time with her brother. When it came to age gaps in the family she was closest to Lucian. Lyra was a little younger than Lilith but she was closer in age to Liv and then there was Lysander, the baby of the family and still away at school for his final year. At least he had Loosh to look up to and he wasn't too much younger than Livia, at least they'd had a while at Hogwarts together before she graduated and Lilith knew well that mother and father both wrote to him over the course of the school year. Lilith too wrote to her youngest brother and she did miss him but she wasn't as connected to him as she was her older brother or sisters.
Lilith browsed the selection of ingredients on offer as the shop contently as the assistant helped some customers. She much preferred experimenting and creating her own little potions and she supposed that little trait ran in the family. Lucian had far more talent than she although she wasn't bad in the slightest. She had a good understanding of the balance required for a successful potion and the wits to always try it on a subject or five but she couldn't do what Loo did. He'd created himself such a successful little business of it all that Lilith was really rather proud of her older brother. Both sides of his business were positively thriving and he was going to make that Nott girl a very comfortable woman.
Smiling to her brother as she heard her voice she carrie on about her business patiently before her brother arrived beside her. "Hello, Loosh." she said, giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek, "Just wanted to spend a bit of time with my big brother. So, what are you doing after work?" There was no ulterior motive to her wanting to spend time with her brother. She wasn't after anything and she didn't need to be. Unlike many of the pureblooded families in their circles the Burkes were a family that actually loved one another and got on well. There was no drama dividing the family and there never would be. Lilith would always have her siblings sides in any fight and she knew that they would have hers. She turned her attention to a piece of boomslang skin, picking it up and turning it over in her hand, figuring it would go rather wonderfully with her oleander. Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
Lilith was always rather proper, a trait he admired in her as she was the example to which their sisters would look up to and her manners and poise would certainly ensure they had the best role model around. Lucian hugged his sister lightly, ensuring he didn’t wrinkle her fine dress – though he wasn’t sure there was enough give in her tight dress to allow for any wrinkles to be visible – and returned his kiss on the cheek. Lucian was the oldest and the heir to the Burke fortune and power, but Lilith was the real treasure of their family. Her work was respectable and completely on the up and up, unlike his own, and she was engaged to be married into the wealthiest wizarding family in all of Britain. Lucian hadn’t yet made up his mind about whether or not he liked Rabastan Lestrange for his sister and he would always keep an eye on her, but she seemed happy enough outwardly, despite not having much of a say in the marriage. Lilith’s engagement, like his own, had been an arrangement orchestrated by their parents. It was a common practice of the social elite, but their father and mother were sensible enough not to throw their children to the wolves for sake of a future fortune or respected name. And unlike the older Burke children, there was a very good chance that Lyra, Livia, and Lysander would be free to choose their own partners, so long as they did not drag their feet about it when the time came.
Never would Lucian suspect an ulterior motive to one of his sister’s visits. If she wanted something, she was perfectly capable of coming straight out with it and she wasn’t the sort to beat around the bush when she had a point to be getting on with. Lucian liked to think he had at least an ounce of the charm his sister had in her demanding yet still endearing manner but as a male he wasn’t very much worried about whether people he gave orders to liked him. Women, he had noticed, had the unfortunate curse of being labeled a ‘bitch’ when they were direct, men were called ‘leaders’. The double-standard worked well for him professionally, but he had rather wished such a term would never be used against any of his sisters and he strived to never speak of any woman in such a way.
“You’ve excellent timing, then. I’ve just finished doing inventory and I am sure Marcus will have nothing to say about me skipping out a bit early for a date with my lovely sister.” Lilith turned her attention to the boomslang skin displayed on the shelf. Of course she would be drawn to such a rare ingredient, the price for a small piece of skin was more than triple the cost of a whole skin from a locally sourced snake, and between what Lucian paid for the stuff himself, plus the cost of having it shipped from Africa, it made this particular item one of the more costly in the shop, aside from complete elixirs themselves. “You have expensive tastes, sister. I do hope you’re not planning something nefarious without my support.” Boomslang skin’s most popular use was in Polyjuice potion, though there were other uses that were not as well-known.

Lilith ran her fingers delicately over the boomslang skin, barely touching it at all. It had a lot of properties that weren't well known, darker properties that could very well one day cause the skin to become listed on the restricted register. As for now it was safe. Uncommon but purchasable without the government breathing down your neck. Not that Lucian would let the government set foot near his younger sisters, he was rather protective of them, even little Lysander and as much as it could be a bother at times, Lilith felt rather protective of her older brother at times. "Nefarious?" She repeated, looking away from the skin and back to her brother, her hand coming to rest at her side, leaving the boomslang skin where it rested. "Perhaps." She smirked a little but held her head high, keeping herself dignified at all times was an absolute must. "Without your support? Why Lucian, I know you support all my endeavours." She smiled sweetly to her brother, "But today I'm just browsing. The green of the male boomslang just happened to catch my eye. I am a girl that likes pretty things after all." She was actually much more than that, even if it wasn't well known. Men of high society didn't much care for women with minds of their own, although there were a few exceptions that came along that did care about what was in the head of their wives or betrothed.
"Come on now, brother." She said, slipping her arm through his and holding on to him lightly. "This lighting is awful for my complexion. You really should do something about it for me." To anyone passing by it may have sounded to them that Lilith was being quite serious in the matter but indeed she was joking. It could be somewhat frowned upon in certain circles for women to crack wise, to make some kind of joke or speak in a sarcastic manner. Lilith had all those lessons drummed into her from such an early age but she was able to be more of herself around her sisters and brothers. Her sarcastic nature was rarely heard by anyone but them, perhaps the only exceptions being Julian and Rabastan. Even her parents she was a little guarded around. There was no one that she felt she could fully be herself with but it was probably for the best to be a little guarded at all times in this age. Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
Lilith was playing coy as she neither rebuked nor confirmed Lucian’s insinuation that she was up to something. She played the assertion off as though she was a simple witch bred for nothing more than looking attractive on a man’s arm and continuing the bloodline. Lucian knew this ploy to be complete and utter dragon dung. “And nothing more than that, of course,” he retorted with a sly grin. Lilith was much more intelligent than she let on, not only in the academic sense but also in cleverness and cunning. She was an alumna of Ravenclaw House, but she could equally have been placed into Slytherin for her ambitious nature and resourcefulness. All of their siblings were clever in their own way, but it was Lilith who set herself apart from the rest of the Burkes and were it not for the fact that she was a woman there was no doubt in Lucian’s mind that she couldn’t rule the world one day, should she want to.
Lucian was not generally of the mindset that witches were of the weaker sex. He knew far too many resilient, powerful women to be foolish enough to think in such an archaic manner. His own fiancée was rising the ranks inside the Ministry and perhaps one day she would even run for office of the Minister for Magic itself, if she could manage to balance her duties as wife and mother with that of running the country. Lucian would proudly stand by his soon-to-be wife’s side should she decide to continue climbing the political ladder, just as he would if that were Lilith’s aim or any of his sisters’ ambitions, but he was not blind to the way society on the whole viewed women. There were those so determined to live inside their ignorance that they shouted about how sexism had been defeated because the Minister was a witch, and yet only moments would pass before they’d make a joke at their girlfriend’s expense. There were some men who made Lucian, and a good handful of other decent blokes, embarrassed for their gender.
She made a joke about the lighting in an utterly serious tone and Lucian’s response matched hers in both sound and intent. “I’ll see what I can do, sister.” He patted her hand gently as she looped her arm through his, signaling that she was ready to set off. He turned to his employee who stood behind the counter, taking a customer’s order for a specialty potion. “Marcus, I’m leaving early. Look after the shop and be sure to give Mrs Lovetts our loyal customer discount,” he said charmingly, winking at Mrs Lovetts who’s sagging cheeks flushed as she turned away from Marcus and the order form he was completing for her to give a little wave to Lucian.
Lucian pulled open the door for Lilith and stepped out into the sunlight as the door gently thudded closed behind them. “Where are we headed this afternoon?” he asked as he looked up and down the busy street.

Humour amongst her siblings was a favourite sort for Lilith. It felt like a private little club, a Burkes only sort of affair. She was able to slip her humour in to a lot of conversations with others but they never noticed, she was too dry and flat for their little pea-brains to comprehend and she was fine with that. More than fine. She found another source of entertainment in their dull wits. Intelligence was something highly prized for Lilith. She was very much a Ravenclaw through and through. Given the choice of any of the houses then she would pick Ravenclaw every time. The house of Wit and Learning was not often frequented by the elite in the pureblood world. It was the second top house for sure, yet most ended up amongst the snakes. Not that Lilith minded and some, much like Lucian and Livia, were exceedingly smart. She was rather fortunate too that she was engaged to Rabastan. He was another Slytherin that was on the far more intelligent side of the snakes. It was a shame not all of them were as smart, but then if they were she might not have nearly as much fun with them. Secretly mocking them to their faces while she spoke to them was rather a highlight of social events and even run-ins in the streets. Not that much conversation was ever held in the streets, a formal 'hello' and on your way. Only the common stood around to chit-chat in the streets.
Lilith pulled her coat over herself a little more, covering herself up to brace the cold outside of the store as Lucian spoke to his staff. Lilith didn't bother looking to his brother's employee. She'd seen him before and there was nothing there worth ogling in her opinion. Not that she was the type to ogle but she was the sort to notice good looks and steal an acceptable glance if the chance arose. Marcus was not worth a second glance, neither was anyone else that worked in Lucian's little shop. They were all too inferior in both looks and bloodline so not worth her time on a double scale so Lilith happily left the apothecary without a thought of who she'd been avoiding in Lucian's shop. Mrs Lovett, she was fairly certain, was the crazy old widow that had a thing for younger men. It was no surprise that she was visiting Loosh's shop. Probably for about the third time this week and it was only Tuesday. "I was thinking the Ambrosia lounge." She said with a quick glance down the street to the bend the high-class lounge sat around. Everyone deserves a little oblivion now and then
The Ambrosia Lounge was a favorite of the Burke women. Sophisticated and elegant, and something of a hot spot for the elite. It was not uncommon to spy a pseudo celebrity within the tastefully decorated walls of Ambrosia and the clientele were high powered enough that the establishment knew to keep the riff raff out if they wanted to maintain their status as the “it” place in Whimsic Alley. It was the perfect place to catch up with his darling sister for a while. “I should have known,” he teased gently, his feet ushering them down the way.
Their journey was not a long one and soon enough they were out of the chill and standing in the entry of the lavish cocktail lounge. The hostess greeted them by name and asked if they would like a more private table off to the side or something closer to the bar. It made no difference to Lucian and he looked to Lilith for her input. “Depends on the lighting, doesn’t it?” he asked, harkening back to her earlier comments, the only hint that he was making a joke was the slight raise of his eyebrows. The hostess didn’t catch on to their inside joke and began to explain the differences in the tables and the lights, attempting to please the siblings. She was good at her job, but not quite bright enough to catch on that it was a game.
Once they were seated and Lucian had ordered for them both, the blond looked to his sister with a small sigh of relief. “What wonderful adventures have you been up to lately, Lil? Have you incited a coo and overtaken the magazine for yourself, yet?” She certainly could if she wanted to. Pur magazine would fall apart without Lilith and Livia, holding it up on their own merits. He tried to tread lightly when it came to more personal subject matter, like her upcoming wedding. He knew his own fiancée was feeling the pressures of wedding planning and he could only imagine how tightly wound his dear sister would be in ensuring every last detail was utterly perfect and up to her incredibly high standards. He would let her broach the subject if she wanted to speak of it, and they were both well-rounded people with plenty to discuss besides their arranged marriages and quickly approaching weddings. They had work, hobbies, and the occasional family gossip to engage in. It had been a short while since he’d spoken with his youngest siblings, and if Lilith had any news of interest, Lucian would most definitely want to know.

The Ambrosia lounge was one of the most high end places you could go in the wizarding world for lunch. It wasn't exactly the best evening place, there were superior venues for dining out in the evening, but for a late afternoon date with her brother it was ideal. They could get to talking about wedding plans, complaining about the prospect of in-laws and, in Lilith's case, wondering how she'd not managed to fall in love with some remarkable and rich pureblooded gentleman while she'd had the chance. It wasn't as if she'd been rushed to find a future husband but at the same time she had the opportunity. Rabastan was absolutely lovely, he came from an exceptional family too which was something Lilith rather approved of but it wasn't love, at least not yet. She hoped the love would grow, she'd been told by plenty of people that would happen over the course of their relationship and she believed it was. Rabastan was a very likeable gentleman and while she knew Lucian never really had anything bad to say about him, or their match, she hoped her brother approved of him and grew to like him. Rabastan and Lucian, brothers-in-law, would make quite the pair, Lilith thought.
"Absolutely." She said in a rather hoity voice, making her come off as quite the snob, caring only about lighting and what made her look nothing less than perfection. Of course she wasn't being serious but the hostess wouldn't know that. She kept her features elegant and lady like, she ensured that her features let the hostess know that she was nothing compared to Lilith and she didn't even glance at the girl. She was a worker, someone paid to ensure Lilith's comfort so there was no need to look at her. Instead Lilith shook off her coat that someone else she also didn't bother looking at, took for her. They were seen to their table and Lilith took a seat in the chair that was held out for her, "Merlin's beard, Lucian!" She said with a chuckle once they were comfortably seated at their table, water poured and a wine selection to chose from. "That will have to wait until I'm married. Far more pressing matters to think about, such as dresses and flowers. Who in the name of magic would want a successful career before all those things?" She most certainly did want a career. Her wedding would be wonderful and beautiful and while it would be talked about throughout the wizarding world, it wasn't something Lilith genuinely believed was more important than her career, after all she had people to boss around for her wedding. Plenty of people paid a heck of a lot of money to ensure absolute perfection and an easy time of wedding planning for Lilith. Lilith just had to give them her ideas and thoughts and anyone that came back to her with anything displeasing was simply removed from the planning ... and perhaps tortured a little and suddenly "missing". Lilith placed a drink order, closed the wine menu and thrusted it towards the help. "How are the plans coming along for the up coming Nott-Burke wedding, might I enquire?" She was curious as to how this wedding of Lucian's was going to turn out. Clementine was not someone Lilith approved of and the witch wasn't exactly letting Lilith in on any of the wedding plans. Lilith wasn't usually one for playing nice with those she clearly did not like but she'd attempted to with Clementine, if only for her brother's benefit, but she'd been snubbed and only had her mother to rely on for information as to what the wedding would hold.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Lilith’s dry wit was a most welcome addition to his day. He enjoyed all of his siblings, but Lilith was by far his favorite, perhaps owing to their closeness in age. He was kind enough to never let on to the younger Burkes that he favored one over the others and loved and enjoyed the company of all of his siblings, but Lilith had stood out above the rest. They had been through a lot together. They were the “guinea pigs” for their mother and father’s parenting skills, skills which were needed on the rare occasion one of their nannies was absent. They were also the first ones to leave the family for Hogwarts and, at least for Lucian, the separation had been difficult. He was overjoyed with Lilith was finally old enough to attend. He was a popular bloke and had many friends while in school but having a sibling around was a different sort of relationship.
“A career over dresses and flowers? Preposterous. You’d have to be a mad woman to seek that out. My apologies, dear sister. I did not mean to offend.” Lucian raised his brow slightly, the hint of a smirk gracing his lips. Oh what the onlookers must have thought of the pair of them. He distinctly noticed the eyes of the waitress widen slightly, the quirk of her eyebrows as she tried to maintain a neutral expression after overhearing what would appear to her to be a serious conversation. The waitress nodded, wrote down their drinks, and turned to leave.
Lucian’s wedding was fast approaching and while the women took care of most of the details for the day, Lucian had busied himself with planning their honeymoon and finding a suitable home for the couple to move into once they were married. He helped with the plans whenever he was needed, but he didn’t know as much about the specifics as Lilith would be wanting. “Things are falling into place,” he remarked casually, trying to decide what bit of updates to start with. “Although I’ve not seen the dresses which you women so covet, I have it on good authority that everyone in the wedding party will be stylishly dressed. I have a fitting of my own next week, hopefully I won’t ruin the aesthetic.”

"I should think so." She said in her very own unique playful tone. It wasn't unusual for Lilith to jest with her siblings, they were the people that knew her best in the world, but it never really sounded as though she was playing. She was rather staunch to appearing to be a lady at all times and sarcasm grossly undercut that so she did it in a manner that one would not really know that was what she was up to. It took a bit to get to know Lilith, to know her little quirks like that, but it wasn't as if she was letting people in and close to her. The only newcomer to her life that she approved of was Rabastan and that was because the two of them were committing themselves to one another. They'd be married at the end of the year and she'd be Mrs Lilith Lestrange. It was exciting and daunting. She'd always known she'd be married off but it was kind of her parents to allow her to try and find love for herself before finding a suitor for her. Rabastan had been the year above her and in a different house. She'd only seen him occasionally at the high society gatherings, never really needed to interact with him really but when she had he'd always seemed nice enough. At least he was well off. He came from the most well off family there was.
Lilith had fun with her brother. She enjoyed his company more than anyone else's. She considered him one of her closest friends. She could talk to him about nearly anything and everything nearly but she did kind of hope that her brother's wedding to Clementine Nott was some kind of disaster. Nothing that reflected poorly on Lucian though. She hoped Clem's dress was a little too baggy or a little too tight. She hoped there was some kind of glitch with her hair or flowers. Lilith knew it was petty but she didn't like Lucian's fiancée all too much. She wanted for her brother to be happy. She'd hoped that he might find himself a woman he loved and could marry but it just hadn't been the case for him. Both he and Lilith were to be married this year, Lucian first and Lilith way off in December. Lilith hoped that her brother's wedding made him proud and that he found some pleasure - besides the obvious - in marrying Clementine because ultimately Lilith's wedding was going to be far superior anyway. "You'll look splendid, Lucian. Every woman there will be green with envy over Clementine's luck." She smiled, hoping to come across as sincere. She didn't want her brother to know that she disliked Clementine quite as much as she did, and she would do her utmost to be polite about her soon to be sister-in-law.
