Yet another pureblood shindig, this one in the function room of the Ambrosia Lounge. Tonight's event was for charity and Annabelle was more than happy to make an appearance on behalf of her family, donate a little of daddy's gold and perhaps try and bid for an item or two at the silent auction. Who knew what she might come away with, but even if it was nothing she would have a wonderful time because she'd convinced Lyra Burke to come along for a bit of fun. There weren't many people that Annabelle could stand for extended periods of time but Lyra's company was manageable. She often tried to make everything about herself but Annabelle overlooked all that, occasionally literally, not reacting to her friend's comments or actions, but that was what made her one of Annabelle's closest, most tolerable friends.
The pair had arrived together, and while their cloaks were taken people were naturally talking about the star duo as they glided effortlessly into the room, looking as though they were prizes to be won. Beautiful and irresistible but they were not prizes, there would be no bids on them this evening. Lyra being somewhat of an actual star was probably more well known to these older looking stuffies, but Annabelle settled for being the most beautiful and radiant being in the room. Oh what it was to be young and beautiful like the two of them. "How are things with Quinn?" She snooped as they were shown to their table where four unknown people to Annabelle were already seated. Lyra's seat was pulled out first and once she was sat, Annabelle's seat was pulled out for her. Annabelle sat down and greeted the table politely before turning her attention back to Lyra hoping they could get a quick chat in before the speeches about the evening began and the meal was brought out.

Social events were a mainstay in the Burke calendar, and Lyra had always enjoyed most any event she was invited to. It was her family’s responsibility as part of the upper echelon to give to the less fortunate whenever they could, and thus tonight’s charity event was something Lyra was well accustomed to. It took very little needling on Annabelle’s part to get Lyra to agree to attend, but working out the scheduling of it all was the real trouble. Between her show, a few odd performances she’d already agreed to, her family’s own events (an ever growing family required an ever growing list of obligations), her boyfriend’s family’s events, and spending time with her beau, Lyra’s calendar was rather full. She opted to abandon Quinn for the evening in exchange for a girls night with Anna.
Heads turned as the two women entered the room and Lyra inhaled confidently. She did so enjoy the spotlight, and regardless of how much leg Annabelle attempted to showcase in order to show her up, all eyes were on Lyra; the one true star. Once they were seated and the obligatory greetings had been shared among the table, Lyra turned to her friend. “Just lovely. We’re talking about going away on holiday next month. Anniversary.” She winked at Anna and leaned back into her seat, eyes scanning the crowd around them. “And you?”

There was less boasting than Annabelle was expecting. Lyra loved to think that she was the centre of the universe and as such would often go on and on about herself. Annabelle didn't mind, especially when there was alcohol involved, loose lips told all sorts of tales and Annabelle loved having all sorts of information to hold against others. She rarely used what information she had, sure Quentin Whipford pressed her buttons from time to time and she just had to retaliate against the pompous little shit, but beyond that, there wasn't much need for blackmail, Annabelle was overly cautious about who she confided in. "That sounds so amazing," She said, with a little inflection at the end of amazing, her smile spread across her face. She was genuinely happy that things were going well for Lyra, she deserved a little happiness but Annabelle was waiting for it all to come crashing down around her, after all Lyra wasn't the sort to hold a guy for too long, but then this was one of her longer relationships, so maybe Annabelle was wrong. "So incredible," she flicked her hair over her shoulder and leant in towards Lyra, "I got back from Bali, like, a week ago. I did some modelling for a spell, it was so much fun." she grinned, "I got so much sun and there was such a cute guy in the room next to me at the resort I stayed at." She left it at that because she didn't want to give more details, Lyra didn't need them, "So where are you thinking of going?" She asked moving the conversation on swiftly as she sat back a little and reached for her glass of champagne.

Lyra listened politely as Annabelle regaled her with her most recent travels. “Oh, Bali! How fun. I remember when I first started planning my own holidays and I thought Bali was just the most exotic place…” She gave a smile teetered right in between sweet and snobbish. “I should definitely visit again, though I’m sure Quinn has something a little more sophisticated in mind.” Lyra’s calendar was full but that didn’t mean she was too busy to plan out her own holidays. Quinn, obviously, had a say in their trip as well, but they were both well aware that Lyra would get her way as soon as she figured out what it was she wanted. It was that last bit that was usually the problem, as Lyra wanted it all. Quinn was very good in helping her in that regard. “We’re thinking maybe Zanzibar although I’ve been missing Thailand lately.” She shrugged her shoulders delicately. “Really, if I wanted to, we could just disappear for a few months and see where we end up.” She paused to take a sip of her champagne before continuing, “but I don’t suppose that would look very good after last year.”

Bali was amazing and Lyra was just being a bitch, Annabelle knew but she let the comment slide, for now. She'd get her own back later on, that was just the way that girls worked. "Oh how sweet, you let him plan things for you." She said, thinking that it was kind of sweet that she might allow Quinn to make holiday plans, Annabelle could never do such a thing, a man would always get it wrong, although Quinn was rather in touch with his feminine side and Lyra had probably dropped all kinds of hints and demands as to what she wanted, Quinn seemed ever so much a pushover, the perfect companion for a pushy piece of work like Lyra. "Oh yes, your terrible ordeal," She said, sympathetically, "Your boyfriend died, or something?"

Charlotte? No, that didn't seem right. Oh, Millie, yes, that was certainly possible. That witch had her panties in a bunch on her bedroom floor for every older gentleman that passed her way. She had some serious daddy issues that seemed to boarder on grandaddy issues. "She really should." Annabelle spoke in quiet tones so only Lyra could hear, she didn't want everyone knowing all the good gossip. "I heard that she dated a street cleaner of Diagon Alley. She thought he was rich because he'd been in a suit and out for a meal, but he was as poor as the filth he sweeps." She laughed. "It serves her right for being a money grabbing troglodyte." Annabelle grabbed her drink and took a sip, hoping that Lyra had some good gossip to dish.

A street cleaner? Lyra turned her nose up as Annabelle spilled the dirty details. How she had missed that bit of gossip was beyond Lyra’s understanding, but she had been busy with her career, plus Quinn did take up quite a bit of her time. “That’s nothing compared to the filth Gertie has been rumored to be seeing. She won’t admit it of course, it’d be the end of her social status, but I’ve got it on good authority that she’s been seeing a muggle shop keep.” Whether Gertrude had actually been fraternizing with lowly muggles was none of Lyra’s business, but she’d heard through the grapevine and that was all the fact-checking Lyra cared to do. Anyone who didn’t immediately renounce such disgusting gossip was clearly hiding something.

Oh Merlin! If Annabelle hadn't been well trained both officially and unofficially, her jaw would have dropped open at the revelation that Lyra had made. Why in all that was magical would Gertie risk such a privileged life? Love? Ha! "What on Earth would possess her to risk everything for a muggle?" Annabelle almost grimaced but held her face together with the poise she had bred into her genes. "Maybe she's playing up because her parents tried matching her with that awful Maynard Plumps." Annabelle let out a shudder of disgust. He was ugly, to say the least, and while not ridiculously old, he was certainly much older than Gertie, but it had all fallen through for whatever reason, so why oh why would she play up with a muggle!?

Annabelle stifled a giggle, turning her head away from the table and covering her mouth. She passed it off as a gentle cough, a mere tickle in her throat and reached for her drink. No matter how well endowed a man might be, Annabelle could never imagine being with someone that was a muggle, or a muggle-born, or even a half-blood. She was fortunate enough to have been giving her parents blessing to do as she pleased with he love life, she could marry whomever she wanted so long as they were pureblooded, but she also had the option of asking her parents to arrange her a marriage should she want, but that wasn't going to happen, Annabelle enjoyed her freedom, and possibly might for the rest of her life, it was all up to her. As Annabelle put her glass down there was the familiar sound of cutlery clanging against glass, the universal sound for 'look at me and listen'. The speeches for the charity began and went for far too long as far as Annabelle was concerned, but after the speech came the starters and she was able to go back to chatting with Lyra, "By Merlin's beard," she sighed, talking quietly to Lyra, "Could they have possibly drawn that out any longer." Annabelle picked up her flute of champagne and took a sip, wishing she'd had something stronger earlier to have gotten her through those yabbering clowns begging for money.

The speeches started up and Lyra and her friend fell silent out of respect, or at least out expectation. She liked to put on a show about supporting charities and these sorts of causes because it made for good press and it was good for her reputation as a celebrity but Lyra didn’t really care all that much. In reality, she wasn’t even sure what tonight’s even was supporting. Or protesting. She just knew that it was raising funds, or maybe awareness, for some cause that her publicist thought was good for her image. The fact that Annabelle was also going and had “invited” her was a plus, so she could at least have a bit of fun throughout the evening. The speeches ended and Lyra joined the crowd in a respectful applause before leaning over to Anna and remarking, “I’ve done full productions that were shorter than those speeches.”

Annabelle laughed and bit her lip to stop herself from going too far. Lyra was funny but Annabelle couldn't help but think the speeches had been more enthralling than some of Lyra's plays, but she would never say that to Lyra, the witch would have a catastrophic meltdown and their friendship would most certainly be over, instead Annabelle sat upright and had another sip of her champagne before placing the flute on the table and starting on her food, cutting it up here and there, smiling politely as some rich fool at their table regaled them with the story of the time he climbed a mountain and came across a yeti. Annabelle was sure it was all poppycock but she welcomed the distraction as she pushed food about her plate taking all but a couple of bites.

The meals had come around but Lyra wasn’t much interested in eating. Anna made a show of moving her food about her plate while the table listened to some long-winded dragon dung about a bloke wanting a Yeti skin rug but Lyra was growing restless. “I’m going to have a look at the auction items,” she said, pushing her seat back quietly and lifting her champagne flute from the table as she stood and left the group to wander around on her own for a bit.
