MITCHELL, Gianna Teresa

f you looked up the definition of the word "independent" in the dictionary, you would more than likely find Gianna Mitchell's picture there. Throughout her life--from the time she was very young all the way through her years at Hogwarts--she has always prided herself on not following any certain crowd, instead preferring to think for herself. However, as she has become more aware of the dangers facing the magical world, Gianna has become much more uncertain and much more anxious over the choices she knows she has to make in the future, which side of the wizarding spectrum she's going to fall on--the dark or the light. While her parents and brother have already made that decision, Gianna's instinct to not follow the crowd is still
very much alive in her. 

For the most part, Gianna prefers to keep to herself, which makes her appear to be somewhat snobby. This is far from the case in reality, however. She does have friends, although she prefers to keep her circle relatively small. As far as a romantic life goes, she has never felt the need to get involved in a serious relationship with a man; to her way of thinking, life is full of enough headaches, and she doesn't need a man to give her a migraine.


Jared Mitchell and Trisha Dearbourne met at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry when they were in their third year of school. Jared, a Gryffindor, played the position of Chaser on his House Quidditch team; it was during a match versus Hufflepuff that he caught the eye of Trisha who, though not a player herself, nevertheless was (and is) a great fan of Quidditch. A Slytherin, Trisha was somewhat reluctant to admit, even to herself, that she had suddenly developed her first crush on someone...and a Gryffindor, no less. She decided to try to quash these feelings down inside, an attempt which was quite successful until their fifth year, when Jared was seriously injured during a game and was forced to give up playing the game he loved so much. In an attempt to get his mind off of this turn of events, Jared decided to join the Gobstones club, of which Trisha was a member. It was here that the two officially met, and Trisha's old feelings came bubbling up to the surface.



As the year went on, Jared and Trisha became very close friends, and, in their sixth year, officially began dating. Although they had a huge falling out in the middle of their seventh year--a row that had those around them wondering if that was the end of the unusual Gryffindor/Slytherin romance--they eventually patched things up. Six months after graduating from Hogwarts, the couple was married. A year later, their first child--a son named Jake--was born. Thirteen years passed, during which Jake successfully passed his first three years at Hogwarts, before Trisha discovered that she was pregnant again. Going to a Healer at St. Mungo’s, the Mitchells were delighted to discover that they would be having a little girl; Jake, however, was not as delighted, as he had hoped to have a little brother.



On July 18, 1963, Trisha Mitchell gave birth to her second child, a daughter named Gianna Teresa Mitchell. With the birth of Gianna, Jared and Trisha felt that their family was now complete, and as such could not be happier.


Gianna first showed signs of magic when she turned eight years old. While petting her family owl, Harold, she suddenly realized that Harold's feathers were turning purple with every stroke of her hand.

Not able to understand what was going on, she carried Harold to where her father was and showed him what had happened. The adult was so happy that he went out and bought her a necklace which had a golden broomstick pendant on it. To this day, she still wears it.



When she finally received her letter from Hogwarts at the age of 11, Gianna had been told enough about the school from her parents and her brother to remain somewhat calm about it. Only when she had bought her first wand did the fact that she was going to study magic actually hit her, and from that point on, she impatiently waited for September 1 to arrive. It was with no amount of tears--just excited squeals of joy--that Gianna finally boarded the Hogwarts Express and eagerly awaited her turn at Hogwarts.
