Alec was one! He was a whole year old and Clem couldn’t believe it! Time had just gone by so fast. Her little Prince was an absolute darling, although she would have liked it if he slept more. They were having a large party for him on the weekend but as it was his actual birthday today, she had invited just the closest in family and friends to join them in helping to celebrate this very special milestone.
With their home beautifully decorated in pale blue and white throughout every room and corridor to mark the occasion, Clem finished getting Alexander dressed and made her way downstairs, carrying Alec on her hip. It was just a little gathering, nothing too formal so she hadn’t dressed up too much, nor had she gone overboard on dressing up Alec. No doubt her darling sister-in-law Lilith would dress up as though she were about to attend some grand gala, but everyone else would hopefully be dressed more appropriately for the event. Clem had stated on the invites that it would just be casual attire, no need to get fancy, but Lilith couldn’t help but dress up, although Clem had no idea how Lilith was doing after having had Nathaniel. She’d only seen her a couple of times. Once to wish Rabby, Lilith and tiny baby Nathaniel a Merry Christmas and once more for a Happy New Year. That was plenty of dealing with Lilith, although now she was having to see her again for Alec’s birthday. This time of year was terrible. At least Clem could rest knowing the rest of her friends and family would be there today, meaning she wouldn’t have to spend too much time with the eldest Burke daughter.
“Here comes the birthday boy!” She called to Lucian as she reached the bottom of the stairs. Coming around some balloons, “Mum and dad should be here in a bit - oh!” She smiled, seeing her parents stepping out of the drawing room, “Mum, Dad, hi!” She smiled, her mother coming over for a hug and giving her a peck on the cheek, greeting her before taking Alec and smothering him in kisses and wishing him a happy birthday. Clem’s dad gave her a little kiss on the head and then joined her mother to coo over the birthday boy. “Are your parents here yet orrr?” She asked trailing off, looking about, half-expecting the Burkes to be here already.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Turning at the sound of his wife’s melodic voice calling to him, Lucian smiled. “Speak of the little devil,” he said with a slight chuckle to Natalia, who had just been asking when she was going to get to see her grandson. The Notts had arrived while Clem was still busying herself with Alec and rather than rush her, he’d escorted them into the drawing room where he had been chatting with his father. His mum had helped herself to the kitchen where she was fixing a fresh pot of tea, despite Lucian’s instance the tea he’d set out for them was perfectly fresh. Lucian followed Clem’s parents out to meet his wife and son in the corridor. He let the grandparents fuss over their daughter and grandson before sliding up to Clem and giving her a kiss on the forehead. “My dad’s just in there,” he said, thumbing toward the drawing room. “Mum’s making tea in the kitchen.” Lucian brushed Clementine’s hair over her shoulder. “Aunties and Uncles should be here soon, then we can get this party started.”
Guiding Clem into the drawing room, Lucian looked over at Theo and Natalia who were cooing over his son. Already a year old, how time flew! It seemed like just yesterday that Clementine had shared the news she was expecting. Their lives had changed so dramatically in such a short period of time and Lucian wouldn’t change a single thing. He loved having his wife at home to care for their son, and he would be perfectly content if Clem decided to permanently leave her job at the ministry to raise their family. He wanted more children, one more at the very least. He had his heart set on a large family but Clementine had other ideas, and honestly he would be fine with only two children. Three, if the next were a boy. Loosh was confident he could make that happen though he really had very little control over it.
Betty came into the drawing room only a few moments behind the rest of their little party, a tray with a kettle and additional teacups in her hands. She ‘ooohed’ happily as she came forward, excited to have her turn with the birthday boy. Betty set the fresh tea tray on the table next to the one Lucian had prepared and then joined the Notts in obsessing over the little prince. Bob helped himself to a cuppa from Betty’s tray.

A girl should be two things classy and fabulous
“You know, no one knows we’re here yet. We could just slink off somewhere and have a little adult fun before the baby's party.” Lyra smirked at Quinn in a teasing manner as she tugged on the front of his shirt, pulling him up onto the porch in front of her. Lyra’s back was to the door as she flirted shamelessly with her beau before leaning backwards purposefully into the doorbell which chimed on the other side of the large door. “Whoops,” she grinned. By now, Quinn had been to a fair few of her family events, so a tiny party like this was sure to be nothing. A larger party was planned for this weekend, something a bit more formal and spectacular, but if she knew her sister-in-law, which she sort of thought she did at this point despite the women not having spent much of any time alone without her brother as a buffer, Clem was sure to make today’s events something special. A Loosh…well he was just so easy going that Clem could have ordered a half dozen young dragons to act as a pony ride for the guests and Loosh would just go along with it. He was too laid back sometimes, but Lyra loved her brother dearly and was happy for the success he’d found as a family man.
Lyra hadn’t given much thought to starting a family of her own yet, her career didn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon and having a baby would only get in the way of things, but after how heroic Quinn had been last year when she’d had her ordeal with that freaky stalker, if he popped the question Lyra would definitely give it a serious consideration. That was all still such a long ways off and today was about Alexander, not herself – though maybe she’d get a bit of the spotlight today as well. Sneaking off in the middle of an intimate party to shag her boyfriend in one of her brother’s guestrooms was certain to cause a little stir, and Lyra much liked the idea of that. She leaned forward and gave Quinn a quick peck on the lips, smiled, then went in for a much more passionate kiss.

Of course the Burkes were there already. Why did grandparents have to turn up on time? She never recalled her grandparents ever wanting to be as hands on as her parents of Lucian's. She supposed because Alec was a boy and because he was the first grandchild on both sides, he was something a little extra special to the families. Clem sighed, although it was one of relief, and perhaps it held a little annoyance, but she told herself that the sooner everyone was there, the sooner it would just be the three of them again, not that she wanted her son's first birthday party to be over quickly, but she could do with people actually turning up on time rather than Merlin only knew how early. Next year she'd tell her parents - and Lucian's - an hour later than everyone else, then, perhaps, they'd be precisely on time. Clem scolded herself. It wasn't too bad having family turn up early to see her son. She was just a little tired, was all.
"I'll get that." She smiled to her affectionate husband after hearing the doorbell ring. It was a beautiful thing to see their loved ones gushing over Alec. He was a lucky boy to be surrounded by people that adored him. Leaving the room to fawn over a confused looking Alec, Clem made her way to the front door, pulling it open to be greeted by her sister-in-law snogging her current boyfriend on the stoop of her home. Lovely. "Afternoon, love birds." She cooed cheekily before stepping aside a little to let them in, once they were done with their business. Clem was just glad that it hadn't been Lilith, although as a golden carriage pulled up bearing the Lestrange family crest and pulled by the whitest abraxan horses she'd ever seen, Clem knew that her luck had run out.

Slinking off with some alone time with Lyra was always a tantalising temptation. They'd had plenty of fun together at her place before coming out this afternoon but there was no way that Quinn would be passing up the chance for a little more frivolity with his gal. "Don't tempt me, love." He chuckled, standing in front of a house he assumed was that of the Burkes. He'd spent some time with Lyra's family on multiple occasions now, but he wasn't familiar with them as much as he probably should have been by now, but Lyra didn't seem to mind that he gave most of his attention to her. Could anyone blame him? She was a knock out.
The doorbell rang and Lyra gave him a kiss, then that minxy little grin of her before they were snogging on the porch. Quinn held a gift bag in his right hand while his left hand snuck around to Lyra's arse, giving it a lustful squeeze. By Merlin's sweaty bollocks, if he could have her right now, he would. The door opened but Quinn didn't notice until he heard someone talking. He'd already pulled Lyra in closer but he released her arse, chuckling at the situation, which caused his lips to part from Lyra's. "Ay, afternoon, Clem." He said, giving her a nod, licking his bottom lip, missing softness of Lyra's lips.

Life with a newborn was hell. Complete and utter hell. Lilith despised having something around her that screamed so often but there was nothing she could do. She couldn't have her house elf raise Nathaniel and while she always looked composed and well rested, the truth of the matter was it all came down to magic. Beauty charms were a speciality of Lilith's. She needed to know them all and become an expert with them in her line of work. If she decided a model didn't look good enough then she needed to know how to fix it to her own liking. Nathaniel was thirteen days old but Lilith refused to give up her work, even as a new mother, even over the Christmas and New Year period. She was a complete control freak when it came to her magazine and she wasn't going to have some incompetent ninny mess everything up so that she could what? Raise a baby? As if.
Stepping out of the Lestrange carriage after it came to a halt, Lilith straightened herself up and took the crying Nathaniel from her husband. He'd cried practically the entire trip. He settled for Rabastan for a couple of minutes, but the second Lilith held him he seemed to start up all over again. She was not cut out for this motherhood business but there was no way in any kind of existence where she would admit that to anyone, not even her own husband, not even to her own sisters!
Once Rabastan had exited the carriage, Lilith bounced the crying baby in her arms. From head to toe she looked like perfection, her baby weight not yet completely gone but it was certainly disappearing, her eyebags covered and her hair positively perfection. Rabastan seemed to be a wonderful father but he would be returning to work soon, something Lilith was dreading. At least she would have her mother to help and even Ceres had offered to mind the babe every now and then, although as they walked to the front door, already opened, ready to receive them, Lilith wasn't entirely sure how she felt about her more-often-than-not drunken mother-in-law caring for her infant.

You're the Queen of the superficial how long before you tell the truth? Alec's birthday was one of the most special occasions of the year, as far as Evie was concerned, and she knew her parents felt similarly. He was the first and only member of the next generation of their little family, which made him something to fuss over. Sure, he looked like his dad, but Evie sometimes caught him pulling a face that reminded her of Clem when they were kids. He looked just like their mum when he cried, it was uncanny, the scrunched up nose, the cheeks, the knobbly chin. She'd never say as much out loud, but it was true. Maybe the next baby Clem and Loosh had would look like the Notts. Maybe Evie would one day have a baby with dark hair and eyes and her pretty face. That wasn't happening any time soon, and she didn't want to dwell on it and put herself in a grump for the day. Today was about Alec and how incredibly perfect and wonderful he was. She apparated to the edge of her sisters property, not a hair out of place as she took in her surroundings for a minute and smoothed down her dress. Her dark gaze fell immediately on the sight of Rabastan and Lilith Lestrange heading up to the front door with a tiny babe in Lilith's arms. Judging by the screaming coming from the thing it didn't like it's mother. Sorry, he. He didn't like his mother. Evie had nothing against Rabastan, he was a friend, warm, good sense of humour, strong, respectable. His wife, on the other hand, was a bitch who thought she was better than everyone. She lacked the intelligence to appreciate Evie's game playing and held a grudge over something or other. Evie didn't care to keep track of what the woman thought, but she would be damned if Lilith beat her to Alec's birthday party. She strutted up the drive in her heels, a smile plastered on her face. "Rabastan, Lilith," she crooned warmly as she reached them. "And this must be the new addition, how adorable." She peeked at the crying baby with a pout that was supposed to be sympathetic. "Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it," she said to Lilith, looking the woman up and down. "You'll lose the weight eventually, too. I love your dress." Leaving her backhanded comment hanging in the air, she turned and strolled into Clem's house ahead of the couple, leaving Lilith and her toilet roll holder dress to crawl slowly up to the house like the insufferable sloth she was. Clem was in the doorway, and Evie leaned in and gave her sister a quick kiss on the cheek and a bright smile. "Good luck with that," she said, giving a subtle nod of her head towards the Lestranges. She wandered into the house to find most of their family already there. "Where is my beautiful nephew?" she called, finding Lucian next and pulling him in for a half hug and an air kiss. She had sent gifts for Alec last night so they would be there for him to open this morning but it felt odd arriving empty handed. _______________________ tag: Clementine Gabrielle Burke , Lucian Angelus Marcel Burke , Livia Eleanor Grace Burke , Lyra Ophelia Genevieve Burke , Quinn Ardan Blackwood , Rabastan Aramis Lestrange , Lilith A. Don't be afraid I'll take the blow for you Rabastan was exhausted. Nathaniel wasn't even two weeks old yet and he didn't seem to have realised that it wasn't necessary to scream at all hours of the day and night. He literally just cried non stop. Rabby had his ways of soothing the babe, but honestly, he half wondered if the child wasn't Rodolphus'. Why else would he be so fussy and unsettled? Rabby had been a calm child, granted he had a foul temper, but he had kept it locked behind a chilled exterior. Nathaniel had not inherited that trait, at least not as far as he could tell yet. Rabby held out hopes that he would settle as he got older, but the last two weeks had felt like two months to him. Not that he didn't enjoy being a father, he absolutely loved it. Lilith had given him an heir. She was the perfect woman, the perfect wife, and now she had performed her duty as a mother perfectly. He could tell she was tired, but she never complained, she just soldiered on, which was admirable. The carriage ride had been loud, save for the few minutes Nathaniel had been quiet while Rabby sang an old lullaby to him. He couldn't sing forever, so unfortunately, as they exited the carriage and headed for the Burkes home, Nathaniel took up his own singing once again. Smoothing his jacket, Rabastan resisted the urge to take his son from Lilith as they walked. She wanted to carry him, she could carry him, but good Merlin, everyone was going to be fed up of hearing that cry after half an hour. Hopefully Nathaniel would tire out and sleep soon. Hopefully Loosh had some strong coffee at hand. Heels on the drive behind them made Rabastan turn his head. Evie Nott, a bit of a bitch, but lovely if you were nice to her, Rabby had never had an issue with her, she was a good time girl and good at what she did. Lilith, on the other hand, wasn't the biggest fan of the Nott sisters, so Rabby greeted Evie with a polite smile. "Evangeline." He let the women talk and checked his watch. They were on time. Clem was waiting in the doorway for them and as Evie flitted off ahead into the house, Rabastan waited patiently for his wife. She could take however long she wanted, she was carrying their son, there was no rush. "You look stunning," he murmured reassuringly in Lilith ear as they walked side by side. _______________________ tag: Lilith A. C. A girl should be two things classy and fabulous
A little bit more annoyance in Clem’s face would have been a nice addition to their make out scene, not because Lyra wished to annoy her sister-in-law but because she was snogging her boyfriend on the landing of her nephew’s birthday party and all she got for the trouble was a remark about ‘lovebirds’. Oh, and Quinn’s lips. Those were a reward all their own. Lyra grinned as she turned around and greeted Clementine with a polite, definitely not ashamed smile. “Clementine, you look gorgeous.” She looked tired, but Lyra wasn't about to say that aloud. She gave her sister-in-law a quick peck on the cheek as she passed by and into the home. “Where have you hidden my brother away?” she called back, not waiting to be escorted in further. Fingers intertwined with Quinn’s, she headed into the drawing room where she already heard voices cooing over the baby.
“Hey there, Daddy,” she said teasingly. Lucian had been a father for a whole year now and it suited him, but it was still weird to think of him as someone’s dad. Lyra dropped Quinn’s hand and pulled her brother in for a hug. She raised herself up and pressed into his shoulder, then spied her own father sitting on the sofa with a biscuit. “Hi daddy,” she said with more sincerity and a bit of a laugh. She released Lucian and looked around. The rest of the grandparents were huddled up together playing with Alec and it appeared she and Quinn might be the first of the next generation to have arrived. Of course Lilith had to show her up by being fashionably late, but where the hell were the rest of her siblings? And Clem’s sister? Lyra was now regretting not pulling Quinn into the bushes for a shag – it would have given them a bit less time with all the old folk. “I suppose no one else is getting a chance with the little bub today, are they?” she asked Loosh. Her nephew was adorable, but Lyra didn’t really have the maternal instinct that made her want to hold whatever baby happened to share the same room as she. She looked at Quinn. “Guess we’d best make our own fun then.” She smirked. “Drinks?”

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Clem left to welcome their next guests and Loosh took the opportunity to talk to his dad about the latest Quidditch match and the call of a cobbing foul that lead to the Harpies winning the match over the Falcons. Bob was just lamenting the poor call when Lyra made her entrance and Lucian turned to greet her and Quinn. “Hi,” he gave his sister a hug, careful not to mess up her hair (how many times had his sisters cried about their hair growing up?). When they parted, he extended his hand toward Quinn. “Hey, mate. Glad you could make it.” Lyra asked about getting a chance to hold Alec and Loosh laughed. “Good luck.” His father seemed the only one of the grandparents not vying for a bit of the baby, and he knew it was not for lack of loving little Alexander, but more that the sofa was Bob Burke’s most favored spot and parting the man from a good cushion was not an easy task.
His sister-in-law arrived next and he gave Evangeline a small hug in greeting. “I think we ought to be taking wagers on who can pry him away from the grandparents first,” he mused aloud to Evie, but it was his mum who responded first with an “oh shush.” Lucian beamed at his mother before she turned right back around to the baby, clearly not taking the hint. “You want a drink, Evie? I think Lyra was just about to making Quinn fetch us all something.” He liked Quinn, they were friends and he thought nothing of taking the Mickey out on him, but he liked him a little less after he started dating Lucian’s little sister. He'd help with the drinks of course, because he really did still like Quinn but mostly just because he wasn't an arse.

Quinn sheepishly smiled at Clem as Lyra dragged him into the home. It wasn't that he was shy, or anything, but he was a lot more reserved than Lyra. Sure he was able to fuck shit up when he was out with the lads, but when he was with people he didn't really know too well, he was a touch more on the quiet side, although if he had a chance to be on his back with Lyra on top, he'd not pass up that opportunity.
Lucian greeted Quinn with a handshake and Quinn shook back with a smile, "Hey, mate." There was no way he would have missed this, Lyra would have dumped his arse if he had. She was pretty family orientated which was nice. Quinn was close with all of his family although he didn't do as much with them as the Burkes seemed to do with one another.
Evie came in and Quinn gave her a smile, "Hey there." He said with a nod,. He slipped his arm around Lyra's waist and gave her a peck on the side of her head lightly, "Anything for my Queen." He told her, "Lucian, where to are the drinks, mate?" He asked, not having any idea of the way around the lovely home of his girlfriend's big brother. "Something with a little sparkle for the ladies." And he wouldn't mind a little something himself.

Walking carefully with her screaming babe in arms, Lilith spotted the ghastly sight of Evie heading towards them. She took a deep breath, preparing for whatever backhanded compliment the commoner had. No doubt she would think herself charming and witty but nobody thought of her in that way. When one looked upon the mildly-greasy hair of one Evangeline Nott, one thought of what a complete and utter tramp she was. No one associated her with anything positive and she just proved Lilith's point with the utter garbage she spewed. She had absolutely no idea what she was on about, but it didn't matter, her comment about Lilith's weight still got to her. Lilith said nothing, letting Evie carry on to great her sister, Lilith and Nathaniel hanging back for a moment so that Clementine and Evangeline could great one another and no doubt exchange some form of crude, improper talk.
Once Evie had gone in to the Burke home, Lilith carried a still screaming Nathaniel up to the front of the house. "Hello, Clementine." She smiled, willing to put forth quite a bit of effort for her brother's bride. "Please excuse Nathaniel, I think he might be a little tired." She chuckled, feeling somewhat like a failure at the moment. Evie's snide comments had not helped her exhausted state, but she would carry on and later, at home with Rabastan, she would address the fact that he had not bothered to tell Evie to fuck the hell off. Lilith gave Clem a couple of kisses on either cheek and then made her way into the party where she could hear chattering voices over Nathaniel's brief pause as he adjusted to the new lighting before crying once more.

You're the Queen of the superficial how long before you tell the truth? Lyra and her beau were already there, and soon enough Lucian was selling Quinn out, making him fetch drinks for the ladies. Evie jumped right on that train. "Ooh, yes please, I love a bit of sparkle." She gave Quinn her most charming smile, and then left them to it when she heard the hideous sounds of Lilith's baby crying. They'd reached the house. Eww. Evie headed for Mrs Burke, who was hogging Alec like she would never get to see him again. Feeling like she should just snatch her nephew out of her paternal grandmother's arms, Evie resigned herself to sitting next to the woman and fussing over Alec. She made small talk with the older woman, polite and charming as ever, and tried to block out the thought of spending the day in the company of Lilith and her screaming brat. To think that her nephew was related to that thing. It was disgusting. It wasn't the baby's fault that he had a complete bitch for a mother, of course, but Evie couldn't help her feelings. Don't be afraid I'll take the blow for you They reached the door, Nathaniel still in a terrible mood, and Rabastan leaned forwards to kiss Clementine on the cheek. "Thank you for inviting us, Clem." He worked rather closely with Clem, them both being directly around the Minister. Or he had done before she went on maternity leave. He did like her, he hoped she would be coming back to work soon, it'd be nice to have a friendly face and a bit of banter in the office. He didn't think Lilith would ever quite understand or accept the Notts charms, but Rabby wouldn't let his wife's opinions bother him. He could like who he liked. He wouldn't flaunt it in her face, but he certainly wouldn't change his ways or his friends for her. Nathaniel's screaming was giving him a headache, and if he didn't get a drink soon, he would snap. Rabastan moved further into the house where he could see Lucian. "You could have warned me it would be like this," he joked in greeting, nodding over his shoulder to Lilith and the baby. “This way,” Lucian answered Quinn with a nod of his head in the direction of the hallway. Their small get-together was quickly growing in size, and while he (and his mum) had prepared tea, champagne was really more suited for their guests. He knew his sisters at least leant more toward lush than sober when it came to social gatherings, and poor Quinn was generally more reserved whenever Lyra dragged him ‘round, so Loosh thought a beer might make him loosen up a bit.
He had barely made it two steps before Lilith and Rabastan appeared, a crying baby Nathaniel bundled in his tired sister’s arms. He grinned at Rab’s remark. Alec had been a crier as well and the Burkes had shared many a sleepless night together in their first few months as a family. “Where’s the fun in that?” he retorted, making a detour from his journey to the kitchen in order to greet their most recent attendees of the afternoon. He shook Rabastan’s hand and clapped him on the black. “Thanks for coming.” Betty’s eyes had darted away from Alec and homed in on Nathaniel from across the room. Apparently one baby simply wasn’t enough for her, but she had her arms full, and was making small talk with Evie.
He looked to Lilith, a kind smile not hinting that he could see she was exhausted and in need of a little respite. “Hey sis.” He leaned in to give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek, instantly aware that she was doused in her usual perfumes. “You look stunning. I was just about to take the lads to get some bubbly. I think Nathaniel’s old enough to join us on the journey.” He looked questioningly at his closest sister waiting for her permission before taking the baby from her arms. “Come on, Nate. You’ll be used to fetching mummy a drink soon enough.” He gave his sister a wink, then nodded to Quinn and Rabastan to follow him into the kitchen, leaving the women and grandparents in the lounge.
Nathaniel quieted as Lucian held him, the gentle bounce of his step as they headed toward the kitchen seemed to soothe the baby who was now looking up with curiosity at his uncle’s beard. Thank Merlin Clem had asked him to trim it, or else the little devil might have tried pulling on it the way he was staring. “Bet all this screaming makes you happy Lyra’s not ready to settle down and have babies, eh?” Quinn had best not be having any thoughts about knocking up his little sister anytime soon, but he wouldn’t put it past Lyra to announce an engagement during his son’s first birthday. “How’s Lil taking to being a mum?” he asked earnestly of his brother-in-law as they entered the kitchen and Lucian drew his wand from his pocket with his free hand. He pointed at the cupboards which opened to reveal a plethora of champagne glasses. Lucian was honestly curious as to how truthful and open his sister would be with her husband, knowing she would never admit to anyone outside herself and possibly their sisters if she was feeling defeated by the adorable little monster in his hands.
