It had been going on for a couple of weeks again. Zane was always on about how he was going to change, about how he supposedly had changed, but he never did. He was too stubborn to be able to even think about truly changing himself and Triss knew she'd never leave him. She knew her family didn't understand but she loved him and he loved her. So they fought from time to time, every couple did, it was just theirs got a little too heated sometimes. Zane wasn't always bad. He could be the sweetest, most caring guy in the whole of the castle. He treated her to beautiful gifts, like jewellery and dresses, shoes and handbags. Anything she could ever want, he'd buy her. He also gave the most incredible massages and he was mostly generous when it came to making love. She knew he loved her because whenever he'd see her talking to another guy, he'd get jealous and possessive, he'd have to have her. Sometimes when they were dating, if he saw her flirting with another man and she took it too far, then he'd take her somewhere where they couldn't be heard and things wouldn't end as romantically, but Triss knew that was always her own fault for taking things too far. Zane was secretly a sensitive guy and she often forgot that about him.
Tonight had been another such instance of her taking things too far. Triss had known for well over a week now that Zane was stressing about them being apart from Christmas. Her family refused to let her near him all summer but now they were back at school, there was no stopping their love. Apart from she had to return home for Christmas which meant Zane was on edge about not being with her and so every little thing was upsetting him. Tonight it didn't really matter what their arguing was about because he let loose more than he had done in quite some time. It wasn't him, though. Triss knew he'd made himself a little something to take the edge off of his anxiety but it had turned bad. At least she was able to get up and walk away once they were done. He probably had a sore face and bruised knuckles while she was finding it a bit of a struggle to breath. She could feel her lips had swollen and she couldn't open her left eye. Her head was agony. she placed her right hand across her ribs, at least one of which was broken, she recalled that feeling from the last time he'd snapped one of her ribs by stamping on her rib cage. It was all temporary, though, she told herself. She could just say she fell down some stairs and get fixed up in next to no time. Healing bones and cuts was easy for a healer.
Triss could feel the blood from her split lips drying on her chin but she had some bleeding in her mouth. She didn't want to make a scene so she just kept her hood up on her robes, kept her head down while she carried on up the stairs she was climbing, nearly at the hospital wing she kept wiping away the blood from near her left eye. She knew this was bad, possibly the worst so far but the idea of telling Zane it was over seemed pointless because they were just so in love. She loved him more than anyone else and she wanted to help him. He could change and with her help he would change, they just needed their families to stop getting involved in their business. With her breathing laboured and only through her nose, Triss opened the door to the hospital wing and looked for something she could spit the pool of blood in her mouth into. This was all going to look far worse than it actually was. If her family wasn't making her go home for Christmas in a few days, this could all have been avoided.

Admit it life would be boring without me
The hospital had been quiet for a while now, aside from a single bed where a first year Ravenclaw was groaning about the taste of the medicine he’d been given. “Come on, it’s not that bad-” Everett picked up the miniature glass where the medicine had measured itself out at the command of his wand. He gave it a sniff in attempt to show it wouldn’t be too bad, but he was wrong. “Well, you can have some chocolate afterwards if you manage to keep it down, anyway.” The boy turned his nose up as he lifted the medicine to his lips. “There ya go.” Everett headed towards his office to fetch the promised chocolate. Upon his return he saw that there was another student present, so he gave the Ravenclaw his chocolate and headed over to inspect his latest patient.
This wasn’t the first time Beatrice Greengrass had come into the hospital wing looking like she’d lost a fight with a bludger, but it was the first time she looked as though she’d taken on twenty bludgers all at once. “Fall down the stairs again?” Everett asked flippantly, then mentally punched himself for taking the tone with a child. It wasn’t her fault, whatever was going on here. He wasn’t completely sure of the situation, though he’d asked her head of house to look into it in the past and written home to her parents regarding her apparent clumsiness. After all her visits, it was hard to believe the stories she came in with. She lied about as well as he kissed women. “Come on,” he said more gently, nodding his head in the direction of a cot toward the back of the room. “Tell me what happened.”

Triss looked around slowly, she wasn't as fast as she usually was and to be honest, that fight had rather taken a lot out of her. She'd been determined to make it to the hospital wing but now that she was there and had been spotted by a healer, she felt as though she could just pass out. But that would create too much of a drama for right now and cause too many questions, ones that would possibly be asked to her parents and she did not want them involved any more in her life than they already were. She was nearly seventeen. Once she was of age, she didn’t need their permission, they didn’t need to find out about anything going on in her life. She would be free of them.
The healer’s comment made her stomach drop. That was exactly what she was going to say. Had she used that excuse too often? Well what else could she say? Tripping over her own feet seemed to work when she’d broken her arm but this was more than just a trip and awkward stumble to the ground. Triss hated the idea that she might have to come up with some other excuse because she really couldn’t think of anything without being totally outrageous like a dragon attacked her, so she was just going to have to stick to the old ‘fell down the stairs’.
Triss followed Crowley to the back where she sat on a hospital bed. She grabbed a tissue and the sick bowl sat on the bedside table and spat out the blood that had pooled in her mouth. Triss wiped her mouth with the tissue, breaking the string of blood and saliva, then wiped the edge of her mouth. “It hurts to breathe a little.” She told him, figuring she might not need to actually give any sort of excuse if he was just assuming the stairs had done it, but she still needed to tell him what was wrong and that seemed like a big one to start with.

Admit it life would be boring without me
The girl sat herself on an empty cot and promptly spat blood into the available sick bowl. Everett watched without flinching. In his time as a healer, he had seen some pretty heinous accidents and dealt with plenty of disturbing incidents. People thought because he worked at a school that he was perhaps sheltered from the traumas other healers would experience, but not at Hogwarts. Not during war. This wasn’t the work of Death Eaters, though, and it wasn’t a fall down the stairs. The bruising over her left eye, the hand-shaped markings around her neck; it all pointed to an altercation but there was time later to attempt to flush the truth out of her. She complained of difficulties breathing. He nodded. “Can you lay back? I want to check your ribs.” Pomfrey had mended the girl’s ribs once before and after Beatrice had made her third visit on Everett’s watch, he decided to read up on the girl’s file. It was grim. Gentle hands pressed against the teen’s stomach, leaning forward near the bed. Yep. Just as he had thought; it was broken. Everett righted himself and stuck his hands in the pockets of his trousers. “I’ll be right back.”
He stepped away to fetch a bone-mending potion and some pain killers for her. Inside his office, Everett set his quick-quotes quill to work as he pulled open the doors to the elixir cupboard. “Patient is complaining of trouble breathing. Physical examination shows L-7 rib fracture. Visual examination shows bruising around throat, left eye, and stomach. Bleeding in mouth. Possible internal bleeding.” He pulled three bottles from the cupboard and shut the doors. He sighed. “Patient: Beatrice Greengrass. Again.”
Levitating the potions to the table at the side of her bed, Everett also brought her a washcloth and a small bowl of warm water. “Your rib is broken,” he said quietly. “Though I suspect you knew that, being as smart as you are.” Not smart enough to not get into these messes, but perhaps she was attacked unprovoked. A rival witch? Were they fighting over a boy? Had it been a boy? Crowley was going to have to get Dumbledore involved this time. Her parents and Head of House hadn’t managed to stop this nonsense. “Drink this. The whole thing. It’s not a pleasant taste but it should help with the breathing.” It was also going to be a painful next several hours for her, but she would have remembered that. The other two potions, one for pain and one for sleep, would be next. Then a salve for her eye and the markings on her neck. She was due to spend the next several nights in the hospital wing, and maybe he’d manage the hear what actually happened to her.

Triss had been to the hospital wing enough to know that she was better off not saying anything, and certainly not admitting to anything. Zane had perhaps taken his love a little too far tonight, his possessive nature was something she had no idea how to control, but the idea of being wanted so badly by him, of being only his, was intoxicating. She was checked out and then left alone for a bit. When Healer Crowley returned he levitated a potionher way which she picked up off of the bedside table. Triss grimaced at the sight of it. She knew exactly what it was and she knew exactly how it tasted and she wasn't looking forward to the experience. At least the Healers here were competent which meant she should be getting a decent pain relief potion and she'd be able to sleep well tonight. Though she was of course going to face an onslaught of questions from absolutely everyone. Crowley, her head of house, possibly even McGonagall and Dumbledore. Merlin, if this got back to her parents then there would be hell to pay these upcoming holidays. Plus she was going to have to face Zane pressuring her to tell him what she'd said to all these people, and she'd have to put up with her dorm mates asking her where she'd been all night. This was going to be such a hassle. Triss did as she was told in silence. She drank the potion, a look of disgust on her face, a familiar burning sensation as it went down her throat and settled in her stomach. It was awful stuff but she finished it all and set the drinking container down on the bedside table.

Admit it life would be boring without me
There wasn’t any protest from his young patient. By now she was a pro at all of this. Such a sad thought. Everett watched as she swallowed down the first potion and pulled a face. He banished the empty bottle as soon as Beatrice had set it down. He liked a clear work space. “The blue one’s for the pain, I suggest you take that now. I’ll give you more in a few hours if you’re still awake.” As he spoke, Everett dipped the washcloth into the warm water. “And you’ll want to wash away that blood,” he said, offering her the towel and then conjuring a hand mirror for her which fell gently on the foot of her bed. “Unless you’d rather not look.”

As per her own policy, Triss said nothing and did what she was told while the healer spoke. She drank the next potion and the second it hit her stomach, she started to feel better. Her body ached less, and she relaxed into the bed. She hadn't realised how tense her body had been but with the pain gone it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She set the empty potion bottle down on the bedside table and then took the washcloth from Crowley and painlessly reached the mirror from near her feet. "I'm confident that I'll be fine." She commented. She took a deep, pain-free breath and let it out. She lifted the the mirror and began wiping at her face without hesitation. She fought back tears that were beginning to sting her eyes. She didn't look so great, but she told herself it would pass soon, she was convincing herself that it looked worse than it actually was, and that once she was done cleaning herself up, that she would be practically back to normal. Triss took another deep breath and carried on.

The second bottle emptied, Everett banished it to the backroom as well. There was only one potion left, but first he would need to apply the healing salve to the hand-shaped bruises around her neck and the ones on her face. Everett waited patiently for the student to finish cleaning herself up, turning his eyes to the floor as he saw the welling of liquid in her eyes. When she was done, he took the washcloth from her and set into the water bowl. Pulling the mirror from her hand, he lifted the water bowl and placed the mirror on the bedside table, then sat the bowl on top. Beatrice didn’t need to look at her injuries again tonight. He banished the whole pile at once. “This might tickle a little,” he warned her, unscrewing the lid of the little jar and revealing a mucus-colored paste. There was a faint smell of cucumbers, added to mask the natural aroma which was none too pleasing. He had purposely given her the pain potion first, because without it the salve would have stung and the girl didn’t need anymore anguish for the evening. He gestured for her to raise her chin, then slathered a generous helping of the paste onto her skin wherever he saw discoloration. “Close your eyes,” he instructed, spreading the salve more carefully so as not to inadvertently blind her.

Triss lifted her head when she was instructed to do so. There was a light prickling sensation that tickled a little. She was used to it. It wasn't the first time that she'd had to endure the mucus looking paste and if history was anything to go by, this wouldn't be the last time. When instructed to do so, Triss closed her eyes. The prickling was a little more intense on her face although by no means could equate to any sort of pain. She hoped she'd be all healed up and ready to go back to classes tomorrow. How long did it take to fix a bone or heal some bruising and scrapes? Triss just thought about the homework she had due. She'd done three quarters of it and had been intending to complete it tonight, but that didn't seem likely to happen now. Hopefully Zane would help her out with it a little. He was always good like that when she was in the hospital wing.

Admit it life would be boring without me
There was nothing more he could do for her physical injuries tonight. Everett hid a frown as he looked her over, making sure he’d covered all of the bruising with the healing salve. The discoloration would improve tremendously by morning, and by tomorrow evening her bruises might be gone completely. The emotional scarring, however, was something else entirely. It was part of his training to work with emotional trauma, but only a small portion of his education really covered it. He’d focused his studies on healing the body, not the mind, but he wasn’t completely void of empathy for this young girl. There was only one potion left, a sleeping draught, but if he could get her to open up about her injuries even just a little before she slept, he’d have more information to provide Dumbledore with when he made his report. “Feeling better at all yet?” he asked, looking down at her from a standing position near her bed. “You won’t feel 100% just yet, but it should be helping a bit by now. It should be easier to talk.” If she wanted to. If history was anything to go by, Miss Greengrass would stay mum. Everett sat on the neighboring bed, a sympathetic expression on his face. “You know, if there’s someone here that you’re having trouble with, I could help. Even just to listen, if you need an ear.”

With their routine over Triss was ready to just try and get some sleep. It was late enough and she was fairly tired after the nights events, so she'd drift off relatively easy, especially with the pain relief potion she'd taken only moments ago. Healer Crowley seemed to have different ideas. He sat on the bed next to hers and looked weirdly at her. She knew in the pit of her stomach where this was going and she silently prayed to whatever deity was out there that he would say something unexpected rather than attempt to probe her about her injuries or worse - attempt to be her 'friend'.
Triss tried to stay calm and quiet. She didn't want to let on a thing. She turned her head to look straight ahead of her, beyond the foot of her bed so that she didn't have to lie to the face of the Healer. What had happened was none of his business. If she had wanted to tell him then she would have done so when she'd entered the Hospital Wing. It was her decision what she divulged. "I doubt your keen listening skills could aid my clumsiness." She said coolly. Perhaps if she shut him down now he'd think she was a complete cow and just leave her alone for the remainder of her time in the Hospital wing.

“Right, well if you should think of something.” Everett knew it was a long shot to get her to talk, and he’d not exactly reacted sympathetically toward her upon her arrival tonight. That was his mistake. He uncorked the final potion and offered it to her. “This will help you sleep.” He waited to ensure she drank the whole thing, then said goodnight and headed to his office. Finishing up the last of his paperwork, he pushed his files aside and scribbled a messy note to Professor Dumbledore, folded it up like a paper airplane, and sent it flying out of the hospital wing. Someone needed to look into this Beatrice Greengrass business.

Triss had the potion and she was ready for sleep. She wasn't going to say a word to the healer or anybody else about what had happened. She knew she'd not been in great shape, but she had been able to get to the Hospital Wing, so that was good. She tried not to think anymore of what could have happened and she tried to ignore the nagging feeling that even though she was ready to forget about it all, healer Crowley was not. Sighing and closing her eyes, Triss just let sleep wash over her. She was done for the night. A fog smothered her brain into a dreamless sleep where she wouldn't have to worry about a thing. Not Crowley, not Zane, not her family.
