She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
They were cousins and understandably Dora knew plenty about her cousin that others might not have. But they weren’t as close as Jovi had been with Theon, and no one would confuse their relationship for that of sisters. It was for this reason that Dora didn’t understand the gravity of Jovi’s confession that Fin had been introduced to her mum and dad as her boyfriend. Jovi had plenty of boyfriends, nearly all more serious than Dora had ever had. The brunette’s longest relationship lasted hardly over a month and it was mostly just sex. There had been one boy at school that Dora thought her father might like to meet, that perhaps he’d be proud of her for settling down with someone from a respectable family, but that relationship didn’t make it a fortnight before he lost interest. Dora would never be used to being alone, but she had plenty of practice. Jovi, on the other hand, seemed to jump from boyfriend to boyfriend without much effort or downtime. Dora assumed at least a handful of them had met the Rowles.
Fin bringing home a posh witch like Jovi, however, would have been big for Daddy Avery. “Mery’s alright,” Dora remarked of Fin’s mum, stepping up onto the runway and strutting down the catwalk as if she were made for it. “We get on well enough and she’s always lovely.” Dora reached the end of the catwalk, turned, and strutted back down. “I’m curious how Aurelius took the news. Did he cream himself when Fin introduced you as his girlfriend?” Dora chuckled at her own joke, knowing full well how much pressure had been on her best friend to find an “appropriate” witch to settle down with. She wanted something different, but if Uncle Ti was footing the bill, she’d get this dress, too.
Back in the dressing room she wiggled out of her clothes once more as discussion turned to jealousy. Dora laughed. “Merlin, no. I don’t think you’ve anyone serious to look out for. Fin’s not really the sort to settle down.” Her remark had been off the cuff, and it wasn’t until the words had left her mouth that she realized how they might be interpreted by his new girlfriend. “Until you.” She pulled a purple cocktail dress over her head and twisted the seams into the proper position. This one fit her new figure better. She turned in the mirror, giving her backside a look and smile pleasantly. “There are probably loads of jealous witches out there who’ve not dated him that you ought to be worried about, though. Everyone wants my Finny Bear, and you’re the lucky witch who nabbed him.” She pulled back the curtain once again and headed toward the runway. “I’d watch where I set my glass in public for a while,” she teased, only half serious. Finley Avery was by far one of the most attractive men their age. His family was well off, and he was the owner of a successful nightclub. He was a total panty dropper, and a bit of a Lothario if she were going to be honest about it.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Ollie was minding Pansy tonight, or was it her aunt and uncle? She didn’t quite remember, the last couple days were blurring together in a drunken haze. She would recall come morning, in time to go down her mental list of who she had and hadn’t asked to watch Pansy this week, so no one knew she was on a five day bender, her only means of escaping the heavy burden of single-motherdom. Dora had always been a bit of a lush, and if she was offered an elixir here or there, she was game to try it. She’d try anything twice. Lately, though, drinking didn’t seem to be enough. Pansy had finally begun to sleep well at night, but it wasn’t consistent, and she was a right terror during the day. Dora struggled to keep the baby happy and quiet. When the baby cried, Mimi barked incessantly. When Mimi barked, it would cause Pansy to wake with a shrill scream. There was some sort of stain on nearly all of her clothes and Dora couldn’t remember the last time she’d slept properly. Alcohol, and a little extra, helped her to cope. It was doing a hell of a job tonight, a truly reliable friend. She had so few of those since she’d had the baby. Everyone always left her, but alcohol wouldn’t.
The girls she’d been with weren’t good friends, but they all knew each other, and she could score a decent elixir off the tall brunette, so she arranged to meet them at the club where drinking and dancing were a given. The wizard situation was anything but abysmal, there were handsome men left, right, and center. Dora could have her pick and sate that craving for attention she so desperately felt. She’d earned a few free drinks thus far, but nothing substantial. Nothing like she needed. The dancefloor would have better odds. Moving to the music, her already short dress beginning to rise up as she shook her hips, Dora felt pressure from behind her. She’d bumped into someone. She turned to look. Holy hell, he was gorgeous. She turned fully to face him, her hips still swaying in time to the tune. “Hi,” she said in a breathy tone that drifted away amid the music. She bit her lower lip as she looked up at him, syncing her movements with his.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Dora watched with furrowed brows as Jasper licked his wounds and excused himself from the party. That was such a shame, he was such a lovely chap and they were only just getting the party started. “Bye,” she said softly enough that he probably hadn’t even heard her. If he had, he didn’t acknowledge it. She resolved to pop by to visit Aly sometime soon and make an effort to see him as well, though the pragmatics of such a fete were much more complex now they weren’t living in the same house as they had done when they were all younger. Thoughts of Jasper were pushed to the back of her mind as the host acknowledged her and offered his hand. Dora shifted her things around enough to offer him a light handshake with little more than the tips of her fingers. She smiled and nodded as he asked if she had come with Lola. “Pleasure to meet you,” she cooed, slowly coming out of her sympathetic state to her more natural flirtatious one. “Normally, a bloke would buy me a drink before he takes me to his room, but I suppose that’d be rather irresponsible now, wouldn’t it.” She giggled lightly and followed him, planning to wiggle into her swimming costume just as quickly as she could manage and then pad out to the pool without missing too much of the fun.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Absolute Fontaine was precisely the sort of shop Dora would have been overjoyed to spend her uncle’s money in a year ago, but the idea of ‘getting formal out of the way’ with her current weight problem wasn’t the dream shopping trip she’d been hoping for. Nevertheless, shopping at any size on another man’s coin purse was infinitely better than no shopping at all. “You’ll have to send my thanks to Uncle Ti for me!” she said excitedly, handing off Pansy’s pram to her cousin as the pair made their way to the shop.
Once inside, Pansy was all but forgotten as the girls began directing the shop staff. It wasn’t as if she could run away, she couldn’t even roll herself onto her stomach yet. Dora was sure she’d be fine in her pram, a spare shopwitch stopping to shake a shiny something or other at her while making baby talk.
In no time her fitting room was stocked with gorgeous dresses of every color and style and Dora was hopping behind her curtain to shuffle herself into a dress that seemed determined to point out Dora’s belly roll. “So… don’t make me wait any longer. I’m dying to know!” Her voice was raised so that Jovi could hear her clearly, completely disregarding the employees or any conversations they might be in the midst of. “Tell me about you and Fin! He’s been suspiciously mum about the whole thing, which means he definitely likes you.” Finally having squeezed, shook, and shimmied herself into the dress and pulled up the zip, Dora smoothed out the wrinkles on the front of the skirt before pulling back the curtain and stepping out of the dressing room.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Dora focused on the slight pain in her abdomen, the dull leftovers from her last contraction – or perhaps the faint beginning of the next one. She wasn’t sure. They were coming closer and closer together, it was difficult to tell them apart. Slight comfort came in the fresh breeze blown her way by the healer and the newly opened window. Green eyes closed and she gave a faint smile. Leo suggested a few additional girl names, a flower theme to play off her idea of using her middle name. It wouldn’t be necessary. She would have a boy and continue the Parkinson family line. There wasn’t anyone else left to do so. Imaginary parental pressure insisted.
The door opened before Leo could answer whether he had children of his own or not, and for a split second Dora imagined the voice speaking was that of her mother’s. She smiled in spite of herself but it quickly faltered as she realized Rebekah had not returned, but a matron had finally arrived and, no! She was ushering Leo out of the room! Why? Dora gave a pained smile at his offer to call on him as the pain within grew stronger and his figure disappeared into the hall. She was alone again and a new contraction starting. Tears fell silently down her pale cheeks. It wasn’t fair. She shouldn’t have to do this alone. Where the bloody hell was Fin?!
He arrived finally, just in the knick of time as Dora’s room was flooded with hospital staff all telling her to breath and push and focus and calm down. She had cried out for him, an outstretched hand reaching desperately for the only lifeline she had left. His hand crushed beneath hers gave her the strength she needed not to give in to the nagging idea of simply letting it all go and sinking into the black abyss that always lingered at the corner of her mind. Hours had passed, painful hours that were more than just physically taxing, but finally Dora was left sweaty and exhausted with a red faced little blob in the cot beside her bed and in need of a new name. Heath Theon had come into the world a little girl, and Dora was woefully unprepared to be a mum to a daughter. Unprepared to be a mum at all.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
She reached the foot of the staircase when Ollie appeared from the lounge. Dora didn’t notice the soft orange light of the fireplace behind him, but she smiled brightly as she caught sight of his face. “My knight in shining armor,” she swooned playfully, taking a step away from the stairs to meet him with a single hand to his chest. “Pansy just adores her Ollie-kins. I’ll have to pay you properly one of these days,” she cooed flirtatiously, beginning to list to the side before she gripped his shirt and steadied herself. She smiled and patted his chest before turning back toward the stairs. “Better yet, send Kitten over and I’ll give him my thanks for having such a wonderful brother.” Dora smiled to herself at the idea of snogging Kit, sure she would have pleasant dreams now that such an image was in her head. She was heading up the stairs, pulling down the zipper on the back of her dress as she headed toward her bedroom and disappeared into the darkness of the top floor.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
The front door opened and Dora fell into it, tottering on her heels like a child playing dress up in mummy’s shoes that were far too tall for unskilled legs to balance in. Skill wasn’t the problem tonight, however balancing was proving rather trying despite the brunette having worn heels since her earliest years at Hogwarts. “Mummy’s home,” she giggled as she pulled herself upright, the doorknob acting as her crutch for a moment. She steadied herself and took a deep breath, then pushed the door shut and turned the lock before realizing Ollie needed to exit before she could lock up properly. Nah, Ollie would lock up for her. He was such a sweet chap, she might have felt bad abusing his offer for babysitting so frequently, had it not afforded her a few moments of escape back to her old life that she desperately craved. “Is Pans sleeping?” she asked in a muted holler, a stage whisper of sorts meant to catch Ollie’s ear from wherever he was lurking in her little manor without causing her daughter to stir from her sleep. Please gods, let her be asleep. Dora was far too intoxicated to take care of a fussy baby tonight. “If she’s not, I’ll just pop out until you get her sorted,” she teased, kicking off her heels one at a time as she stepped lightly toward the staircase.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Dora wasn’t the sort to be above telling others she wanted gifts, but she didn’t like looking as though she were asking for a handout or that she was down on her luck. She wasn’t wealthy, by any means, but she was no longer destitute as she had been a year ago, and Fin would never have allowed her to be so poor that she were homeless. If throwing her own baby shower would be perceived as her begging, then she was more than happy to have Clem sort out all the details and play the hostess. She would sit back and accept all the gifts and attention, and receive none of the judgement throwing her own party would have brought her. “That would be brilliant, Clem. Thank you. You really are a fantastic friend.” Dora set the tray of sandwiches on the table between them and pulled out a chair for herself. She leaned forward to look at baby Alec and cooed a little more genuinely in his direction. “Your mummy is wonderful, isn’t she?” Talking to the baby while his mum held him was more than enough for Dora right now. Party planning aside, she wasn’t feeling nearly good enough to be able to handle another episode of his crying at her expense. Dora simply leaned back into her seat, still smiling at the babe, and plucked a sandwich from the tray.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Jovi’s remark made Dora grin. Pansy was so much like her. Yes, of course she was. Dora was gorgeous – everyone knew it, and Pansy was gorgeous, too. She was a little chunker but Dora managed to disguise the baby’s pudgy little rolls with frills and sparkly accessories. Dora knew all the fashion tricks Pansy would ever need to know, but she’d been assured by the healer that babies were supposed to by pudgy and that Pansy would likely grow out of it. That was a reassuring statement, as Dora was still reeling over her extra post-partum belly weight. They were both chunky at the moment, but could hide it with a cute outfit until they shed the weight.
“Pans has more clothes than I do,” she said in response to her cousin’s question. “Not that I’m lacking, by any means.” Dora laughed lightly, beginning to push Pansy’s pram down the cobblestone alleyway toward some of the nicer robe shops. “But I would like to get a few more dresses for summer before all this lovely sun goes away. I can’t allow my daughter’s closet to be better stocked than my own.” Shopping was going to be tricky in her current state. Dora’s typical attire was short and skimpy, showing off enough leg that she looked six feet tall despite being a petite five foot, three. Five foot, eight with her shoes on. How was she supposed to wear summer dresses when she was currently a self-proclaimed erumpent? Needless to say, she wouldn’t be telling Jovian that she needed to go up a dress size. “I don’t really have anywhere particular in mind though. What are you thinking?”

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
A new wardrobe was definitely a requirement these days. Dora’s figure hadn’t bounced back as quickly as she had expected it to. She’d tried on a few of her figure hugging dresses this morning but opted for something looser, still not pleased with the excess belly she’d been working hard to lose. There had never been a need to exercise before Pansy. Dora was naturally thin and graced with a high metabolism that allowed her to eat almost anything she wanted within reason. It had also been easier for her to forgo a meal pre-pregnancy, but now the idea of skipping lunch just made her even more tired than she already was. Pansy wasn’t a great sleeper, at least not at night. She was loud and fussed, and thought she needed to eat every thirty minutes or else the world was going to end. In the day, however, Pansy was an angel. Sleeping in her pram during a shopping trip was practically a given, though if Jovi was lucky the tiny brunette would wake long enough to show off her gorgeous eyes.
Whimsic Alley was the perfect place to pick out a few new dresses while simultaneously showing off her new little love and catching up with her cousin. Dora was simply over the moon that Jovi and Fin were dating, and there was so much gossip to discuss over their still new relationship, but she would of course allow the redhead to gush over her baby and herself first. Pansy had truly been a gods-send to the attention-starved single mum. She loved having strangers come up and gush over the cute little outfit she’d picked out for Pans, or the adorable way her stick-straight black hair stuck up like a little hedgehog. A little time away from the baby was not only welcomed but a huge relief, but she’d not gotten much of that just yet. Still, if she couldn’t have time to herself then at least she was the center of attention.
Greeting Jovi with a hug, Dora positioned Pansy’s pram at just the right angle to avoid the direct sun but still be easily visible to her adoring second cousin…cousin once removed? Dora didn’t know but exactly how the relations all worked out, but Jovi was some sort of cousin to Pansy and would need a good view of the baby for the obligatory ‘awws’ and ‘ooohs’. “I know. I would have arranged something sooner but this little one has taken up all of my attention. She’s darling though, so it’s hardly a bother.” In true Dora fashion, she kept hidden as much of her real thoughts and feelings as possible. Only a few very select people were burdened with witnessing Dora’s darker moments, of which the new mum was having plenty these days, but she had spent her entire life pretending everything was lovely that it was almost like second nature now. Even family wasn’t privy to all her ups and downs, though they probably could see a bit more than Dora thought she was letting on. “It’s just been fabulous. Really, it has. She practically sleeps all day long and just makes these adorable little cooing sounds. Its brilliant, I’m sure you’ll hear it soon enough.”

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
Dora pulled the door shut behind them as they left the empty nursery and stepped into the more polished looking hallway. The entire rest of the house was furnished and looked lived in – not messy, and not yet complete, but warm and inviting. Aside from the pile of child-related catalogs on the end table on the ground floor, it was practically impossible to tell that a child was soon to be living in the tiny manor.
The idea of a baby shower was so obvious now that Clem mentioned it, and Dora felt foolish for not having considered it as a means of helping her sort out what she needed and where it would come from. “I honestly hadn’t thought of it,” she confessed. “I’ve been so busy with the house and all… I suppose I ought to. It would be ever so helpful.” She held the railing as she stepped down the stairs and turned toward the kitchen. She had been shopping the night before in preparation of her friend’s visit, and while Dora held no accomplishments in the kitchen, she’d been able to put together a little spread of finger sandwiches and a cheese platter. Nothing that required cooking or baking, two things she was sure the ruin if given the opportunity and pressure of entertaining, but enough that she could feel like a real hostess. The idea cheered the sullen brunette as she gained a little perk in her step.
“Am I to organize those sorts of things or should I make Fin handle it?” She waved the idea off as she opened her refrigerator and began pulling out the trays she had prepared the night before. “No, I should do it. He’s rubbish with party planning -” Hands full with a tray of little star shaped sandwiches, Dora shut the fridge door with a bump from her hip. “- At least compared to me.”

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
“Pish posh,” she exclaimed, flippantly ushering off his concern for embarrassment with a flap of her free hand. The bus darted between two tall buildings, seemingly down an alleyway that wasn’t actually large enough for a vehicle to pass through. Everything and everyone on board the knight bus seemed to elongate as the width of the bus squished itself into the narrow passageway, but other than looking strangely, Dora felt no discomfort. She continued, interrupted. “Who could possibly be embarrassed at their sibling’s presence? Theon adored whenever I came ‘round.” That was, perhaps, a slight exaggeration clouded by rose-colored glasses and an ideation of the men in her life that she had lost all too soon. She and Theon were definitely closer than many siblings Dora knew. Fin and Anna loathed each other, and Narcissa didn’t even speak to her Andromeda any longer. In her mind, Dora’s relationship with her late brother was on par with Kit and Ollie’s, or Clem and Evie’s. The true strength of the Parkinson bond was perhaps lost to time, but they had at one time, adored each other’s company to some degree. “Ally’s lucky to have you, but if you’d rather not come by I won’t hold it against you.”
The bus lurched forward suddenly, causing Dora to gasp audibly and grab Jasper’s arm for support before they were flung back into their seats as the bus came to a jarring stop. “Pontypridd!” Prang, the bus driver, shouted her destination as the doors flung open.
“Thank the gods,” Dora muttered under her breath, eager to get away from the wretched bus. She’d managed to make it all the way home without getting sick on anyone, herself included, and she decided to call that a victory for the trip to her mum’s. If nothing else about her visit was notable, at least she didn’t get sick all over the handsome Jasper Flint on the journey home. “This is my stop," she explained, still not completely used to her new city just yet. "Have a lovely time in Hogsmeade,” she said, giving Jasp a chaste kiss on the cheek before heaving herself up onto her tall heels and waddling her way toward the bus exit.

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
The absence of his hands on her back left a chill over her skin but a flash of heat quickly washed it away and she was soon all too aware that she was sweating again. Childbirth was so unattractive; this was certain to be the only time she’d go through this. She’d be more mindful of her potion in the future to avoid another accident. She shifted on the mattress to look at him more directly, swiping her hair back behind her ears and subtly trying to blot away any moisture from her forehead.
A boy or a girl, that was a difficult question. One that seemed loaded with pitfalls and landmines if answered incorrectly, or worse, came to fruition disappointingly. At least the handsome healer was trying to lighten the conversation with a little joke, and honestly if she hadn’t already had her son’s name picked out long ago, she might have considered it. Leo was a nice name. Leo Parkinson. Dora Zabini also had a nice ring to it but no one in their right mind would name their daughter after her. Not even Dora herself. There would be no Dora Jr, even if she and Lola had jokingly referred to her unborn child as such. “If it’s a boy, he’ll be named for my father. Heath.” She paused, a slightly distant look in her eyes. “And my brother, Theon, as well. I can’t quite decide which order to put them in, though. I like it both ways.”
Had Clementine suggested a similar name combination for her son, given Dora had no attachment to the names as she clearly did with her choices now, she would have figured out a kind way to tell her friend that both were horrible options. Heath Theon sounded liked like a toddler trying to pronounce the name of a Roman coliseum and Theon Heath sounded like a battle worn city from a Tolkien novel. Dora, however, made neither of those connections and was utterly blinded by her love for the men she no longer had in her life.
Her gaze focused once more on the handsome healer. “It would be fun to dress up a little girl, though. Definitely not naming her after my mum.” It was a serious remark but there was a touch of humor there as well. “Maybe Rose,” she mused aloud. “That’s my middle name, but it sounds a little…” She made a face that expressed her displeasure with her only option for a girl’s name. “Let’s hope I don’t have worry about that. Everyone wants a boy, right?” She shrugged and looked down at her belly, her solemn expression reappearing as she caressed her stomach. “Bollocks, it’s hot in here.” Her remark was more directed at herself, her ability to keep her thoughts to herself slowly slipping away as her discomfort grew. “Have you got any kids? I bet you’d make attractive babies.”

She was a little bit ruined a beautiful disaster but she was magic
He was sweet. It made Dora smile throughout the pain. She appreciated that he played along with her story of immaculate conception, even if it was painfully clear to both of them that she was nothing more than harlot who couldn’t narrow down the list of men she’d been with in order to identify a possible father. She didn’t even know all of their names. It wasn’t fair, really. Fin had had just as much fun as she had on that beach resort holiday but if he managed to knock up any of the witches he’d been with, he didn’t know about it. Wizards had all the luck. No shameful looks when they sneak off after a night fun, and no carrying ‘round a bowling ball in your uterus for nine months. And the contractions… The ones she’d had thus far were no fun at all, and the only sage advice her mum had given her before disappearing was to expect loads more pain before she had a sweet little baby to cuddle. Rebekah hadn’t put it quite so lovingly but the thought of holding her baby was the only thing keeping her going now. That, and Leo’s skillful hands on her back. She let out an unattractive moan of pleasure as he managed to massage away the ache she’d been failing to reach. “Oh bloody hell, that feels brilliant.”

She nodded at his question, confirming the importance of the day and accepting his birthday well wishes. “Ta.” She rubbed her belly absentmindedly. “Believe me, you don’t want to get me anything more than chocolates. My arse is the size of a erumpent already, but I could probably eat the whole of Honeydukes’ store room.” She laughed lightly, unworried about the unflattering comment regarding her backside. Jasper was not the sort of wizard to judge her too harshly on her appearance. He would have understood. She was sure he and his wife would have talked of having their own children at some point, had she lived, so a pregnant woman in his presence wouldn’t have been too unsightly. She hoped.
Jasp asked after her birthday plans and she was happy that, at least for the latter half of her day, she was certain to have a smashing good time. “Oh yes. I’m meeting some friends for tea. Ally is supposed to be there.” An inspired look washed over her and she sat up straighter, the bus swaying her slightly as she looked at the handsome wizard. “You should come! I have a few single girlfriends that you might get on with.” Jasper was such a lovely bloke, he deserved to be happy. Dora didn’t mind playing match maker for him. His wife had been gone nearly a year now, by her count, and while she assumed he would find it too early to seriously date someone, there wasn’t any harm in having a little fun in the meantime. She didn’t know Jasper all too well, but he always struck her as a bit of the opposite of herself. He liked relationships, clearly, and was very respectful of everyone, measuring his words before saying them. Dora and relationships were like water and oil. And having any real brain to mouth filter was a virtue she still lacked, even more so as her brain turned to mush with the pregnancy. What she did know was that regardless of her current situation, she and Jasper wouldn’t make for a good pair long term, so there was no point in his having a good time in the meantime with her. She wasn’t that sort, but she knew plenty of girls that would love to shag the handsome widower and wouldn’t make him feel tawdry afterwards.
