Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Thus far, married life was not living up to the stressful expectations. In fact, Lucian found it rather simple to be married to Clementine. She was smart and had a good sense of humor. They got on well. So well, in fact, that not a month after returning from their honeymoon, Clementine announced that she was with child. Lucian was overjoyed. It was their duty, yes, to have an heir and he’d always known that to be one of his responsibilities as a man, but the idea of being an actual father was something that was slowly blossoming. He was concerned, however, that Clem was trying to do too much for her condition and he hoped to speak with her about it tonight before tea.
He was lucky that this far into her pregnancy she hadn’t become the terror he had heard so many hormonal women became while with child. She had her moments, of course, but overall she was as level headed as he had known her to be throughout their entire courtship. This gave Lucian hope that Clem would be receptive to his concerns. The health of their child was at stake. She wasn’t just a wife now, she was a mother. Her priorities would have to shift somewhat. As a man, he couldn’t begin to understand the true measure of what he would be asking of her. His ignorance could very well be his downfall, but he had only the best intentions at heart.
Leaning against the doorway, Lucian folded his arms across his chest, striking a handsome pose. He gave a casual smile at his wife. “Well, well, well. Look what the niffler dragged in,” he remarked, a teasing charm to his words.

Life had always been fast paced for Clem. She worked hard and she had her other duties too. Duties to her family to be the perfect daughter, duties to the Dark Lord to be the perfect follower and duties to Lucian as his fiancée and then his wife once they were married, now added on top of all that Clem was pregnant, almost half way pregnant too. She still carried on as she had been before her pregnancy, if anything it was a little easier because she wasn't having to plan for a wedding - that had been stressful. Comparatively preparing for a child was a lot simpler than planning a wedding. This was the first grandchild expected on both sides of the family and both sides were preparing well in advance. While Clem was looking forward to becoming a mother and hopefully giving her husband an heir right away, she was missing a few things from life. She found that with her days so full of work and errands that she wasn't as full of energy as she had once been. Carrying around a life was actually harder than she'd thought it would be.
Coming home late after a busy work day Clem looked forward to a long soak in the tub and spending a bit of time with Lucian. He was actually a rather fantastic husband. He was sweet, thoughtful, and supportive. Clementine had really lucked out with such a considerate human being. In their way of life you really didn't have to be married unless you were in public. Clem was lucky to have grown up with her parents having been in love and she knew Lucian's parents had been in love when they'd got married too. She hoped that someday she might love Lucian and he her but it wasn't a necessity to making a marriage work. Marriage was a choice, it was an agreement and you didn't need to be in love to make a choice work.
Arriving home Clem made her way to the bedroom. Lucian wasn't there. Before her bath she intended to have something to eat. She'd missed dinner having run a couple of errands for Sybil instead. She sorely wanted that witch nocked down a peg or two. But before she could eat she needed to dresses herself in something a little less work-y so she changed out of her work wear, putting it in the basket of her walk in closet where she preferred to change for various reasons, and put on something a little more relaxing.
After getting changed Clem headed out of her closet but as she stepped out she saw her husband leaning against the door jamb looking as handsome as ever and potentially a little frisky. Oh, that could have been her. Well he was definitely handsome and Clem wasn't sure if it was just married life, pregnancy hormones, or a combination of the two, but she found her sex drive was certainly wilder than it had been before they were married. Of course that would have to be on hold, she needed to eat. Skipping snack time made the day difficult to get through, skipping a whole meal was putting her on the edge of collapse! "Lucian!" She shut the wardrobe door behind her, surprised at her husband's presence but more than happy to see him. Husband. That still took a little getting used to. "I didn't realise you were home." She smiled, crossing the distance to the doorway where he stood. "I'm just on my way to the kitchen for something to eat." she tip toed up to give him a kiss, the curve of her bump brushing up against him. That little life growing inside of her was still not something she was entirely used to, even though she had her child with her day and night she wasn't used to being so big.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
He had heard Clementine’s arrival and the fading of her footsteps as she headed away from him towards their bedroom. It afforded him just enough of a lapse in his arrival in their bedroom to startle her, and he almost looked apologetic for half a second before a look of amusement overtook his expression. Her small but growing belly wobbled as she jumped but the good-mannered smile on her face showed she held no ill will against her husband. He really was far too lucky to have had such a union arranged for him, despite the lack of true feelings he felt for her. His heart would forever lie with another, but he would not pine for a woman who chose to love someone else and he would not put Clem through the heartache of knowing her husband’s affections resided outside of their bedroom. Lucian wasn’t the cheating sort, but if it ever did come down to that, he hoped to Merlin that he’d have enough sense to keep his infidelity a secret. “Just finishing up some private orders,” he explained, not wanting Clem to think he was hiding from her in their own home.
She mentioned getting food, and Lucian smiled. She ate much more now than she had on their honeymoon and he could tell the old adage of “eating for two” was much more than just a saying. “Why don’t you sit and let me bring you something. You’ve likely been on your feet all day. You deserve a little waiting on.” Lucian enjoyed fussing about in the kitchen, so it really wasn’t putting him out any to prepare her something delicious and healthy while she rested, but he couldn’t deny to himself that he was perhaps attempting to butter her up a little before addressing her busy work schedule.
Escorting her to the lounge, his hand at the small of her back, he guided her over to the sofa. Allowing his hand to gently graze her rounding belly, Lucian smiled. “Any requests?” he asked, wanting to take stock of today’s cravings before popping off to the kitchen where he prepared just enough food to satiate her without making her feel as though she’d eaten too much. He returned a short while later with a platter, preparing her a plate first, then his own. His mother would throw a tantrum if she saw them eating on the sofa, but Lucian didn’t care.

Honestly, just how in the world was a pureblooded man raised to be so perfect? Clem enjoyed her husband's attentions immensely and being waited on by him was perfect. Admittedly she'd enjoy being waited on by just about anyone these days, but it was always so wonderful when Lucian put forth that little extra effort in their marriage. She knew they were still in their little honeymoon phase, as her mother called it, and it would no doubt last a little while longer, probably right up until she delivered their little bundle of joy and then it would change. Despite being pregnant she had found her libido was out of control but she couldn't imagine that would be the case after Lucian's little heir had arrived, still she hoped that when the honeymoon phase was eventually gone, that they would still see eye to eye on most things, and most importantly, would he tell her who his private orders were for? She certainly wanted to know but maybe she'd enquire while he was nestled on the sofa with her, rubbing his hand over her belly, get him all relaxed and hopefully more willing to share what sounded like private information!
Giving a list that sounded like she was reciting some kind of higgledy piggledy shopping list, Clem sat back and relaxed on the sofa, resisting the urge to get up and make her way to the kitchen to see if Lucian needed a hand with anything. She knew he wanted to take care of her and so she grabbed herself a book and had a read while he got things ready, although if she were honest she was looking at the door, waiting for him to come through about every second or third line, and if she were even more honest then she might have admitted to herself that perhaps the reason she wanted to help Lucian in the kitchen was more so that she could pick at things while he prepared them, but it didn't matter, she wasn't afraid to eat a platter of food in front of Lucian, although her mother would most certainly advised strongly against such behaviour.
Closing up her book as Lucian came in, Clem took a quiet breath in through her nose to see what she could smell on the platter before Lucian even gave her her plate. "You're incredible!" she told him as she watched him get her a plate ready. She tucked in to all sorts of food, relaxed and happy. "I have to pop out in a little while," She informed him between mouthfuls. "I've left a couple of things in my desk that I need to proof read before Aurelius starts talking about 'the Floop Network' or 'Pridditch' at his less-than-important meeting tomorrow." It wasn't exactly true. It was true that Clem had left such notes for Aurelius and his minor departments meeting tomorrow in her desk draw, but it had been done on purpose for an excuse to get back into her office and close enough to the offices that surrounded Aurelius' to see just what she could find on those that surrounded him. They had all been loyal to Sybil at one point, just how loyal would they be to the temporary Minister?

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Compliments were never necessary though always appreciated, especially when Clem’s tone was as sincere as it was when he brought out her food. It wouldn’t always be this easy to impress his wife, he was sane enough to know that, but if he could find a few small things to keep her affections, and she maintained a couple of things for him in return, then theirs could be one of the truly pleasurable marriages spoke of in old tales. Keeping their child in a pleasant mood would be something wholly different and despite being eager to be a father, Lucian didn’t really know much of anything about raising a child beyond what he had learned from looking after his youngest siblings and watching his father.
As if on cue, Clem opened the door for the very discussion Lucian had planned for the evening. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather leave it until tomorrow? You’re a quick reader and I’m certain you’ll be able to make any necessary changes in the morning. Besides, if the Minister thinks it’s called the ‘Floop Network’ then you’ve a bigger challenge at the office than proofreading.” Aurelius Avery was a respectable wizard with a good reputation but how he was able to claim the position of Minister for Magic after Minister Galanis was murdered still eluded Lucian. He was not well versed in politics or government, beyond how it affected his business and his family’s personal holdings, but he was quite certain the Head of the Transportation Department was not the next in line for the position of leading the entirety of wizarding Britain.

Clem laughed. Lucian probably didn't understand that when you were in the moment you read what was in front of you. You had to sound knowledgeable and certain of what you were saying and one small slip up - like 'Floop' - could potentially throw the whole meeting. Aurelius was well versed enough in the transportation world to perhaps not make the error of 'Floop Network', however there could be other bits in there that could be dangerous to an inexperienced Minister, not that there was, Clem was rather thorough, but it was all a good excuse to get back after hours. "You know what I mean!" She giggled, a little flirtatiously, smiling and hoping that he wasn't going to push for her to stay home. She understood that she always seemed on the go, but it wasn't as if she was neglecting him at all, she was still fulfilling her wifely duties and so she couldn't see why Lucian would have a problem with her heading back to the office for a little while.
"So what were you up to?" She enquired inquisitively and eager, keen to see if he had any good gossip on his clients, she even sat herself up a little, looking eager to see if he'd tell her just who his private order had been for. Perhaps it was someone she knew! Perhaps it was something a little ... delicate. Oh Merlin she wanted to know what it was her husband was up to and she hoped she didn't have to press even more, because she would, he was her husband! They had to know everything about one another's lives, no secrets! So she didn't actually believe that at all, that was actually logic of the insane, but she certainly wanted to know if there was something she could gossip with him about. She'd even promise not to tell a soul, not even Evie!

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
The stresses of politics and office life were beyond Lucian’s comprehension. He was smart enough to recognize his blank spots, but he certainly didn’t think a bit of proof reading was dire enough to call a pregnant woman in after hours following a full day’s work. He would have enjoyed spending more time with his wife, they were still newlyweds despite her growing belly and there was more to learn about each other that this time could have been used for if she wasn’t always off working, but that really wasn’t Lucian’s first concern. Hell, it wasn’t even his second. She was carrying their child. Any stresses that Clem felt would be transferred to their baby as would the fatigue, the poor diet, or anything else that affected his wife as she worked herself to the bone. She laughed off his concern with a flirty look and redirected the subject but Lucian would bring it back ‘round again. Her health, and the health of their future baby, depended on it.
Asking after his work, Clem sat up eagerly as if he was about to detail an exciting story she’d been waiting all day to hear. It was nothing so interesting, at least not today’s order. Had she asked a few days ago, Lucian had been brewing a very strong love potion for a young witch desperate to have her friend return the feelings she’d been holding for the other woman for years. And the week prior he had made an anti-aging potion for a certain celebrity who would remain nameless, and age-less if his handywork did the trick. Today’s work was nothing nearly as exciting, though the potion required no less attention to detail. “Just an order for one of the regulars at the shop. Her son’s having a bit of trouble with acne and she’s wanting something stronger to send him to clear it up.” It really wasn’t exciting at all, but without a healer’s prescription, it was technically not something he could sell to the woman. “Luckily our child won’t have to deal with that sort of trouble,” he remarked, popping a piece of meat into his mouth and swallowing before he continued. “If he inherits your skin, there’ll be no need for potions.” He stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. “So long as he’s healthy.”

"Aww." Clem empathised. Acne at any age was no joy and it was sweet that Lucian could help out. Of course her husband was paid for his services but he could have turned the witch and her sons needs away. Lucian was rather business savvy it seemed, and while Clem didn't know a whole lot about the business side of his life, she had every intention of someday learning. Someday being the word of focus right there. Clem had no idea when she'd have time. Her work within the ministry would give her a little time here and there, but then she had her unofficial work as a Death Eater and it honestly ate into her time. She still had plenty left over to give to Lucian, but it wasn't enough to go into details about his business, not if she wanted to get busy with her husband, which was a need she needed satisfying quite frequently she found.
Lucian wasn't the smarmy sort of guy that seemed to try and charm the knickers off a woman at every chance he got. He was thoughtful and considerate with his compliments. Clem loved it, he was really a star in her eyes and truly sweet but his comment wasn't sweet enough to feel emotional and cry over, however Clem found herself with tears welling up in her eyes, "You're so thoughtful." She tried to keep her lips pursed together but her lower lip dropped and the tears came pouring out. Thank Merlin they were done with eating because she could have been sat there with food falling from her mouth had he timed his sweet comment wrongly. "I'm sorry." She sniffled, waving her hands in front of her eyes, "I just," She continued to fan her eyes, hoping it would stop the tears she had from falling but it was doing nothing, "Could you pass me a tissue?" She asked her husband, continuing to fan her eyes as tears really started to stream down over her cheeks. He was just so sweet, honestly, how did she even deserve him?

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
The stressors of a high ranking Ministry official were enough to contend with, but the effects of the pregnancy also took a toll on Clementine and Lucian was witnessing them all first-hand. His kind words evoked tears. Head tilting to one side in a compassionate manner, he stroked her cheek as he scooted closer to her on the sofa. This was not the first time Clem had broken down for seemingly no reason, and based on his conversations with her healer, it was not likely to be the last. “Honey, don’t cry.” Holding her face between his hands, he turned her face up to his and kissed the little crease that formed on her forehead whenever she wept or became angry. He dropped one hand and leaned forward to grab his wand from the table in front of them. “Accio tissue.” From a cupboard on the other side of the room, a little box of tissues came zooming through the air and straight into Lucian’s hand. He plucked one from the box and passed it to his wife.
Her emotional state created the perfect opportunity to return to their earlier discussion. “Darling, you really need to slow down. Just look at you.” He lifted her chin with his hand and ran his thumb across her lower lip. “You’re carrying our child. That should be your focus right now. Let someone else worry about the Minister. You’re there far too late as it is, and you’re going to have to scale back at least a little once our little one is here. Let the Minister hire someone to take up the extra work load. You need a break.”
Of course, Lucian had no idea that not all of her time spent “working” was actually at her Ministry job. He couldn’t know she was moonlighting elsewhere because he trusted her enough to not stalk her schedule and watch her whereabouts like some less secure men might have. All he knew was that Clem was working far more hours than she ought to, and it was no longer acceptable. How could she possibly be expected to keep herself healthy working overtime and bursting into tears whenever someone said something nice to her, which he assumed happened regularly as she was quite lovely to look at and also rather competent at her job. It wasn’t only compliments that could trigger her crying, but anything remotely emotional like when they had seen his sister’s play and one of the characters died, or when she had eaten the last of the strawberries but still had the craving. And the crying wasn’t the only worrisome new behavior. She was also completely knackered nearly all of the time, not to mention horny which of course Lucian wouldn’t be complaining about anytime soon.

Lucian was absolutely incredible, he was so sweet and tender so of course that started Clem off once more, causing her to cry even harder as he kissed her forehead. He summoned her the tissues and she took one from him, dabbing under her right eye and then her left. She felt completely foolish breaking down like this in front of Lucian, and all over absolutely nothing at all! Her hormones had gotten the better of her yet again and yet that knowledge was completely useless for there was no way to stop it. Lucian didn't have some magical potion tucked away that he could use to help regulate her emotions and honestly, she wasn't sure such a thing would be safe. As pesky and annoying as her hormones were, she could only assume they were needed in order to help their child grow wonderfully strong. "Thank you, Lucian." She sniffled, "I don't know what's come over me." She dabbed her eyes again and then her nose. Scrunching the tissue up in her hand she did a double breath and held her hands in her lap, trying not to cry further.
Lucian voiced his concern that she was stretching herself thin and the tears she had no control over fell harder. She was giving him cause for concern and that just simply wasn’t acceptable. She didn’t want to be one of those women that only lived to please their husband, but at the same time she didn’t want to worry Lucian, he was such a wonderful partner and given the circumstances he had every right to be concerned for his pregnant wife. “I know, there’s nothing more important to me than our child, nothing!” She wanted to assure him of that, she was fine, it was just her hormones going crazy. “You don’t have to worry about a thing.” She took a deep breath, pulling another tissue from the tissue box. She dabbed her eyes, knowing it was about time that she told Lucian of her other affiliations. She intended to tell him not long after they were married, but they’d found out they were pregnant and so it had kind of been put off for a while. “There’s something you should know,” She said, wiping the tears that remained on her face. At least she’d stopped crying. “I don’t just work for the Minister, I work alongside others, for a man that wishes to revolutionise the world.” There was no way that Lucian couldn’t have heard of Lord Voldemort, or his followers, “I work for the Dark Lord.” There, it was out, and she wondered how her husband would take the news. He was a pureblooded and he and his family socialised in all the right circles so surely he would be fine enough with it. Heck, her sister in law set to marry a Lestrange this year and both of the Lestrange gentlemen were within the ranks of the Dark Lord so she hoped the Burke family were on the right side. It wouldn’t be fun to raise a child with a deceased father, but as kind and lovely as Lucian was, if he did not in the very least support the cause, then that was possibly the way their marriage would go - with her becoming a widow.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Although he had always known it to be true, it was a relief to hear Clem say aloud that their child was a priority. She was a good woman, a good wife, and she would be a good mum when their child finally arrived, but she needed to start thinking of herself as a mother now, because her actions affected their unborn babe in ways Lucian was smart enough to recognize he didn’t completely know. She had accepted his request with as much grace as a crying, hormonal woman could, and Lucian thanked her by running his hand along the side of her face, wiping at the tears on her cheek with his thumb as he gently caressed her face. “I’m glad to hear it,” he replied honestly. He was glad and so relieved. The night would be much simpler now that they had gotten this elephant out of the room, or so he had thought. She took a moment to compose herself and Lucian afforded her the silence to do so respectably, but he was not expecting what came next.
She had a second job? The wife of a Burke did not need a second job to keep herself in the luxuries they surrounded themselves with. Sure, they weren’t the Lestranges but the Burkes had money enough to keep all five of their children living comfortably without need for dual income. The only reason his sisters worked was because they wanted to, not because they needed the money. Clementine’s work for the Ministry had been established well before Lucian had entered her life and he wasn’t the sort to insist she needed to leave her job simply because she was to be his wife, but a second job? What was this? Lucian was a smart man, but the dawning of what his wife was explaining to him came on slower than he would have liked to admit. Working with others. Revolutionize the world. The Dark Lord. He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. A puzzled look formed on his face as he reconciled the news with the fact that it had been kept secret from him for months now.
He moved further from her on their sofa and eventually stood, pacing the room twice before he left for the kitchen and found himself a bottle of bourbon. Lucian unscrewed the cap and set it on the counter, then pulled a glass from the cabinet and returned to his wife, his secretive, Death Eater wife and stared at her. Empty glass and full bottle in hand, he looked at her. “You’re saying…” The sentence hung for a moment unfinished as his mind skipped ahead in the conversation. “In the paper, that..that Hit Wizard who disappeared? That was you? And that couple in Leeds, that you too? You’re a…” Stunned, Lucian couldn’t even say the words aloud. He wasn’t upset by the work itself, and the fact that it had been kept secret from him was staggering but he was more than a little flummoxed at the realization that the woman he had married, that was carrying his child, that slept in the bed beside him every night was a Death Eater. How had he not known? Lucian raised his glass to his lips but upon realizing he’d never filled it, he raised the other hand and tipped the bottle of bourbon straight into him mouth.

Oh the air was tense. Clem had no idea how Lucian would really feel about her working for the Dark Lord, it was quite a lot of information to take on board and undoubtedly he would have questions. He walked off on her and Clem decided to give him his space, she had no idea what he'd do but they were married, it wasn't as if he could just leave her, she was carrying his child, his heir! Clem felt a little nauseous, nervous about what her husband would do. All kinds of thoughts raced through her mind at a million miles a minute. Would he need some space from her? Would it have been best if she'd confided this information in him before they were wed? Was he leaning against the Dark Lord? Oh Merlin, if he wasn't a supporter of the Dark Lord then would she have to kill him? She truly hoped not, he was a good man and a good husband. She wanted to spend many years with him and honestly, she wasn't certain the widow lifestyle or title would suit her. Evie's fiance had died and it would look exceedingly suspicious if Lucian were to pass too. No, she truly wanted Lucian to stick around, what they had with one another, the life they were beginning to build was quite lovely and their child would need the both of them.
The sound of footsteps approaching signalled Lucian's return. A bottle and glass occupying his hands came as a little surprise but Clem couldn't blame him. He had some questions - and rightfully so - but he seemed to be freaking out a little more than Clem had anticipated, however it was enough that she was able to suppress her own emotions which was certainly a help for now. "Yes ... well no, not me personally." She wasn't a murderer like that, things like that were often left up to hit men of the Dark Lord. Lucian was clearly taking this news rather roughly and she wasn't sure she could help ease it at all but she supposed being mildly honest was the best way to go, answer his questions as honestly but as gently as possible while holding back on anything too gory that might upset him, "I'm a Death Eater, Lucian." She said standing from the sofa he'd been comforting her on only mere moments ago, "But I'm still me, our family is still my priority, I promise you that." She ran her hand over her bump, her head tilted ever so slightly as she looked to her husband, hoping he was able to see her for more than just a Death Eater. She was his wife and she was the mother of his child too.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
Not her personally. Okay, well at least there was that small comfort. His wife wasn’t a murderer. Or she was and he’d just not picked up on the right news stories. It had been so hard to keep track, there was so much going on in the world these last few years and it seemed the chaos was increasing in recent months. The Daily Prophet was putting out an evening edition of their weekday papers just to keep up with all the news, and that was just what the press had caught wind of. If Clementine had been able to keep her part in this war a secret from her own husband for so long now, then surely there were others doing work that the press and authorities hadn’t discovered. Maybe the authorities were in on it. The potential depths to this revelation were seemingly endless and a thousand possibilities crammed their way into the forefront of his thoughts. He was getting a headache.
Clem tried assuring him that her priorities were still with their family and the life they were building together. She stood and moved closer to him, and instinctively Lucian moved towards her as well, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a warm cocoon-like hug, the bottle and empty glass in his hands clinking as they met behind her back. Resting his chin on the top of her dark hair, Lucian’s eyes remained unfixed as he tried to process everything. There was silence between them for a moment though it was quite noisy inside his head and he was finding their lounge not nearly quiet enough to take it all in. He needed fresh air. He definitely did not need the bourbon he was holding, that wasn’t going to allow him any faculties in coming to terms with this massive reveal. Kissing the top of her head, Lucian released the grip he had held on her, then looked down into her eyes. “I need some time with this,” he explained. He turned slightly and set the bourbon bottle and empty glass on the nearest surface he could find, then turned back to Clem. “But I’ll be back. I just need… to think.” Placing his hand gently on the bump where their child grew, Lucian looked at her belly then back to her face. He kissed her forehead, the only thing he could think of to try to put her mind at ease while his continued to race, then grabbed his keys and wallet and headed out the front door.
The night air was warm and despite the late hour there were still plenty of people on the street. He crossed the road under a streetlamp and headed toward a park that was frequently used by joggers. He wasn’t dressed for it but perhaps a short run might clear away the noise and allow him to process the news more rationally because other than the shock of it and the secrecy, it was all very rational news. On more than one occasion Lucian had partook in conversation of the proverbial water cooler regarding the statement this Dark Lord was making, the steps toward progress and the beliefs he espoused. It was all right in line with Loosh’s own beliefs. He’d been raised to understand the importance of the magical lines and he’d learned early on the detriment to society the muggles created. Lucian certainly supported the Dark Lord’s mission and to that end at least he could be certain his child would be raised by parents with an equal understanding of the importance of their kind and the threat the thinning of magical blood caused. Clementine’s affiliation, if nothing else, was a positive one. He could certainly get on board with this news. The fresh air was helping tremendously.
He’d been gone for more than two hours and when he returned he was sweaty from running and likely smelled of smoke and weed and whatever else was being smoked in the couple of groups of teenagers he passed loitering in the park. They were out too late to be up to anything good but it was summer and with no responsibilities, Lucian couldn’t fault them for wanting to find a little safe haven in the darkness of the otherwise abandoned park. Stepping softly on the plush carpet, Lucian entered their bedroom to find Clementine already in bed. He crept passed her and made his way to the en suite where he stripped down and stepped into the shower to rinse the smell of his run off him. Hair damp and skin cool, he slipped into the bed beside his wife and rested his head on the pillow beside hers. She still needed to cut back on her day, regardless of who it was she was working for, and Lucian had made up his mind as to how he could support her in that endeavor. “I want to help,” he said gently, not sure whether she was awake enough to hear him or if his words were falling on deaf ears.

With all things considered Clem thought that Lucian handled things rather well. He didn't walk way from her or treat her any differently. He did need a little space after showing her some much needed affection and Clem was fine with that. She smiled as he left and went about her business, getting ready for an evening alone and then eventually climbing into bed alone. She wasn't worried. She was married to Lucian and she had his child in her womb. He had been calm when he'd left and honestly, he would come to terms with the news soon enough, be it tonight, tomorrow or a week from now, Clem had faith in her husband and his ability to ride the rough waves. They'd only been married a matter of months but in that time Clem felt she'd really come to know what Lucian was like as a partner, as a husband, and she was certain that no matter what happened between the two of them, that he would be an amazing father to their child.
Clem lost track of the time laying in bed. She was about ready to drift off having put her book down and turned her light off, but as she laid there in the dark she herd the door handle turn and the door quietly open. She recognised the pattern of the footfall and knew it was Lucian home from his walkabout. She laid there silently as he got himself ready for bed and she wondered if he would say anything.
She feigned sleep as he came back into the room from the ensuite and listened to his movements, able to see him in her minds eye purely from the noises he was making. He climbed into their marital bed and Clem waited, the silence deafening until he spoke. Her body relaxed, she hadn't even realised that she'd been tense, but she rolled over to face him, rolling to he back first and then on to her side now that she could no longer roll in one swift move. "Help?" She said quietly, "Help how?" She wasn't sure how Lucian could help but he hadn't come home reeking of too much booze, he hadn't come home angry and he hand't spent the whole night with another woman. That to her was a win and if he wanted to help her then she was certainly open to suggestions.

Everyone deserves a little oblivion
The pillowcase beneath his head was damp as his hair shifted with the turn of his head. Clem was rolling towards him and he waited patiently for her, allowing her to move on her own knowing she would only get slower as her pregnancy continued. He wouldn’t rush her for anything if he could help it and he appreciated her patience in return. She’d not put up a fuss about his leaving earlier and she hadn’t waited up, wearing a hole in the rug for him to return, nor had she called her sister over for the evening for reinforcements unless Evie had already come and gone in the few hours he’d been away. Clementine rested on her side facing him and Lucian turned to meet her eyes. Stroking her cheek gently and smoothing the dark hairs around her face, he gave her a serious but kind look. “You are working too hard, Clem. If our family and our child means to you as much as you say, then you will need to cut back on your work. I cannot do your job at the Ministry but I can take on any duties you may have with You-Know-Who. If it means more time for you to rest and take care of our baby, there isn’t even a question in my mind.” He moved towards her and kissed her forehead. Lucian wasn’t certain what he was getting into. He was sure it wasn’t as easy to get into the Dark Lord’s ranks as he was making it out to seem but the decision had come easily enough once the shock of Clementine’s news had worn off. His wife would not be fighting for their child’s right to a magical life alone, and as the man of the house he had a duty to ensure their family the safest life he could afford them.
